Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

The pour was a dark dark black with good head. Aroma was chocolate, licorice and a nice hop bite in there. Flavor was chocolate roast, pine hops, where is the alcohol?. Good solid beer Mouthfeel was smooth.

First baltic porter in a while. Tastes much more like a lager than any porter (euros included) I’ve ever had. Pea flavor like pee flavor... Not my favorite brew but it got me buzzed if that’s anything to anyone?

Taste 4/9 bottle. Looks: Opaque black with a few tan bubbles after the beer calms down. Aroma: Some wood, some fruit and a little chocolate and alcohol. Taste: Some spice hops atop the chocolate, fruit and vanilla. Not astounding but nothing amiss either.

Aroma of dark fruit, some chocolate, and light roasted malt notes. Perhaps light brown sugar notes are there as well. Pours dark brown with underlying red hues and no head at all. Dark fruit, roast, more dark fruit, a touch of metal, chocolate, alcohol, and a light coffee note round out the succession of flavors in this one. Lingering mix of roast and dark fruit in the finish, maybe a touch thin on the palate.

bottle - Pours very dark brown with a one finger tan head. The ample aroma is of roast malt and milk chocolate. It has a sweet chocolate malt flavor with a hint of vanilla and some good balancing hops. The full body and smooth palate feel make it a pleasure to drink. Excellent.

Bomber from Boston. Pours dark brown with a small head. Aroma is milky chocolate, roasts, and herbal hops. Flavor starts with cocoa, cream, and roasts, with later notes of ash, alcohol, and dark chocolate. Palate is medium, a bit thinner than I would have expected. Finish is long, with nice roasted character. Good.

Pours from the 22oz. bottle a root beer-ish dark brown with a one finger tan head that quickly fades away into almost nothing. Can’t tell what degree of carbonation is going on in the darkness. Aroma is of smoky yet sweet toffee-ish malts. Taste matches the aroma exactly...a pleasant, damned near perfect mix of smokiness & sweetness! There is a nice "sparklyness" on the tongue that is not too fizzy. The mouthfeel is down the middle...not too heavy, night too light. Now I see why there was such a clamor for this beer. I’m really not a porter fan, but if there are more like this, I soon will be! Cheers, Victory!!!

bomber. brought this back from Christmas trip. deep brown pour with a finger or so tan head that subsides to a ring. aroma of wood, dark fruit, caramel, nuts, chocolate, coffee and leather. sweet malt taste with hints of all of the smells. the taste isn’t as strong as the smell though - probably a good thing. smoke and a bitter coffee taste throughout the long finish. no hint of the alcohol at all. well crafted brew.
