Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Thanks to HogTownHarry for this bomber (II THINK!!!) Appearance: Jet black with a small tan head. Aroma: Coffee and peat, some chocolate, spice and sweetness. Flavour: Quite a creamy mouth feel, light coffee, chocolate, tea, alcohol is not detected, it has a long malt - toffee cream finish. Very nice.

Bottle: Poured a black color porter with an average size foamy head with average retention and some light lacing. Aroma is a mix of roasted malt with light bitter notes and medium black chocolate. Taste is also a nice enough mix between some roasted malt with notes of black chocolate. Body is about average with no apparent alcohol and some good carbonation. I was expecting a lot more character and must admit to having been slightly disappointed.

a bit thinner than expected, but it was flavorful and easy to drink. Roasted slightly but chocolate and grsin flavor come through well.

Quite enjoyed this. ChocOmaltOsweetNbitter. Bit more on the sweet than bitter and not overly roasty, but all in all very appealing. Thanks all over again Mr. Doug

Pours a deep deep ruby with a thin white/tan head... Roasty and sweet aroma without being too sweet... Flavor profile matches the aroma, though the flavor is very straightforward without being overly complex... Medium bodied, medium mouthfeel...

Pours a dark black brown color with a medium to large sized foamy light tan head. Notes of milk chocolate, heavy caramel, nougat, and massive amounts of tootsie roll. Medium mouthfeel and decent lasting finish. Very drinkable and fairly tasty.

22 oz bottle: Deep, deep brown color w/ a short lived light beige head of thin foam, and ruby colored highlights as light passes through it. Very roasty at first, but it gets tempered by chocolate and toasty malt as it warms. Some light toffee and a bit of woody aroma, alcohol, and a faint raisiny nose. The flavor is chocolate, light roast, some noticeable hop bitterness up front and a toffee/caramel finish. The finish is fairly dry and neutral flavored with a touch of roasty chocolate peeking through. Very little of the fruit in the aroma makes it into the flavor. Some toasty malt as well. The higher level of carbonation sort of makes the mouthfeel a little distracting from the rest of the beer. It is still medium full bodied, but there’s a bit of a bite to it. The alcohol is well hidden. While I’m not completely disappointed by this beer, I’m not enamored by it at all. I like the nose better than the flavor, which to me seems a little boring. Again, just my opinion on this one.
