Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Pours with a dark brown body topped by a thin to medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a nice roasty note and a touch of chocolate. Medium to full bodied and smooth.

Pours a translucent brown with mahogany edges when held to the light. The head is tan, medium and retains well. The nose is filled with impressions of milk chocolate, nougat, toffee and mixed berries. The flavour is similar, but it has a slightly metallic, sour tang, that isn’t offensive somehow. The aftertaste is nicely smokey with nice tones of roasted malts and earthy, citric hops. That metallic tang persists into the finish and aftertaste along with some peppery spice. The mouthfeel is creamy, full and slightly chalky towards the bitter drying finish.

Pours a dark nut brown color with a thin tan head that fades as soon as you take a sip and the oils from your nose hit it. The aroma is nice and robust and you can smell the chocolate malt with a blend of barley. The flavor is nice and creamy with a smooth texture and a robust finish. You can really taste the hops and chocolate malt in the after taste, it is like having a chocolate hop bar in your mouth. Overall it has great carbonation with a nice balance of malt and hops.

22 oz bottle. Lots of roasted nuttiness and dark caramel/toffee in the aroma along with some straw lager notes as well. Pour was fairly large, with a fizzy dark sand colored head that almost entirely disappears. Body looks semi like a darker/thicker cola making it look not all that appealing to me. However, there’s not as much carbonation in the feel of the beer as i was maybe expecting from the pour, but a strong, crisp consistency persists. A variety of nice malt flavors in this one with roasted dark and pale malts, some softer machademia nuttiness, and minor sweet melon alongside of some subtle grassy straw lager bitterness. There’s definitely some decent things going on here, but i feel that i wouldn’t have enjoyed the flavor profile as much if it brewed to a lower abv.

This beer rules. Everything about it seems very authentic, compared to the baltic porters that I’ve had before. It reminds me of a "bigger" version of the classic Baltika 6 Porter. So smooth & drinkable, you’ll forget it’s 8.5% ABV. Highly recommended.

22oz bottle. Pours a black body with hints of red highlights. Small, dark tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves minimal lacing. Very sweet aroma. Lots of dark fruits, roasted toffee malts, and fudgey chocolate. Very rich. Flavor is similar with more emphasis on the toasty toffee. Big malt profile with a good amount of baker’s chocolate. Some molasses and cherries and even a hint of smoke in the finish. Finishes with a burnt toffee and fruit flavor as well as a hint of warming booze. Charred sugar lingers after the initial sweetness goes away. Palate is medium to full and chewy. Overall, not bad, but not noteworthy. Could use some more bitterness to balance out the big burnt toffee malts.
