Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Pours dark brown nearly black with a small light tan head. Aroma is roasted malt and a lot of chocolate and cocoa. A small bit of toffee and a hint of floral hop spiciness. Flavor starts with a bit of fig and dark plum and raisin fruit. Picks up a nice roasted chocolate and bitter cocoa notes. Finishes with a delightful coffee and nutty character. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very nice baltic but a little thin bodied. Well balanced and rich.

I have actually wanted to drink this beer for a long time, but I have never seen it until now. Pours out a dark brown color without much of a head on it. Kind of weak in the smell, a little bit of chocolate, and thats about it. Kind of reminds me of the heavyweight version of this, but I dont think it is as good. Taste is sweet and has a little bit of alcohol. Coffee and chocolate are abound as well. Interesting beer, but perhaps not my cup of tea as much as I wanted it to be..

This is a really fine American Baltic porter, but no Pekuno’s Hammer, the late great offering from Heavyweight. Dark fruity aroma of figs and dates with some milk chocolate and caramel. Taste echoes aroma, but with prunes and espresso added in. Alcohol is hidden. Very nice.

Never did get to try Perkuno’s Hammer, but they said it was even better than this, so it must have been good. This is a tremendous beer, and the history behind it is ever cooler. Highly recommended.

Black pour with just a bit of red. Quickly dissipating cream colored head. Aroma of roasted nuts, cherries. Taste of coffee in the front end. Sweet, fruity finish. Very nice.

Bottle, pours a dark brown almost black beer with a tan head that quickly dissapears. Aroma is very sweet and roasty. Flavor is a chocolate and roast punch with a dark fruit finish followed by some hops. Body is medium and the end is dry and a little bit thin. Could not taste the alcohol. very good beer, but Storm King is much better.

Very dark brown pour with a thick caramel head. Lots and lots of chocolate in the aroma with a good dose of dark fruits like raisin. Sweet, fruity, chocolaty, with a smooth mouth feel. Maybe not as bold as I wanted it to be. Solid brew. It’s been so long since I had Perkuno’s Hammer that I can’t begin to compare the quality.

Thin head that reduces quickly. Sweet molasses and caramel malt aroma with some raisins and dates. Rich, dark and roasty with the expectation of a ton of body to this brew from the massive aroma. Color is a very dark brown with a hint of red around the edges. Malty flavor with a variety of dark fruits. Raisins, dates, plums and sweet malts. Everything a good baltic porter should be. Noticable alcohol presence but it does not detract from the flavor. Finishes sweet and roasty with lots of lingering dark fruits. A damn good baltic porter. Not exactly as I remember it from Heavyweight but still pretty damn tasty,
