Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Nice dark pour with a thin caramel head. Lots of chocolate in the nose, along with a sharp sweetness - prunes or cherries. The taste is surprisingly sweet, offset somewhat by a punch of carbonation. The alcohol is hidden almost completely - just a hint in the finish.

Bottled. Dark brown pour, nice tan head, nice roasted aroma. Very roasty in flavor and a nice hint of alcohol in the finish. A fine Baltic Porter.

22 oz. bottle. Dark brown body, reddish highlights, with a short, fizzy, tan head that diminishes to a lasting pool of foam. Sweet aroma of molasses and toffee along with notes of roasted malts, caramel, chocolate and cherry. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately bitter. The beer finishes as its started. Medium body with a thin, watery un-Baltic like texture. Too much carbonation. Lacks the heft I associated with this style. But styles aside, this is an enjoyable beer.

22oz bottle - best by 12/31/08 Deep brown, nearing on black coming out of the bottle. Sufficient tan head fades quickly into a solid ring. Slight lacing. Very heavy and enjoyable roast laden nose. Caramel, toffee and butterscotch join the enjoyable roast in the body. Fresh coffee really keeps this alive. Finishes lagerish with a push of hops. Very good.

Bottle, Monk’s Cafe in Philly, with Traci, Fin & Loz. Deep brown pour, just a little brown glow, beige head that fades fairly quickly but leaves a bit of lace. Aroma of just-out-of the-oven walnut cake dusted with cocoa. A few resiny hops tossed in for fun. Chewy, raisiny sweetness, nutty raw chocolate, buckwheat honey finish. Really nicely balanced. This feels like a beer they could have pushed just a little further attempting impact/wow factor. But that would have ruined it. So...way to show restraint. This is good beer.

The roasted malt aroma in this bottle smells wet, not like cardboard, but like low tide sand while clamdigging. Body looks thin, color grays on the edges. Burnt grain, too present alcohol, thin body and a biting finish. bleh
