Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Thin brown pour with a minimal head and flavors of chocolate and dried fruit. I am very entertained by the fact that black eyed peas were used in the brewing and wish I’d tasted them in the mix. Not Victory’s best but still a solid brew.

Dark brown in colour with a very thin and quick to dissipate tan coloure head, no lacing. Looks very much like Coke. The aroma is sweet, some coffee, burnt, some chocolate, light smoke. The flavour is lightly sweet, some burnt malts, lightly bitter but for the most part a bit on the watery side. Thin mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium carbonation. Finishes thin, alcoholic, roasty.

Not anywhere near what I expected. The thin and watery body where a huge surprise. I grew tired of this one very fast.

650ml bottle from IPFreely, thanks Tim.

Bomber. Dark brown body, light beige head. Sweet malt, coffee, caramel, and chocolate aroma. Could actually taste the black eyed peas in this but not in a bad way. Malt was obviously predominant, along with cereal, chocolate, coffee, caramel, slightly fruity. Actually finished rather sweet and not too dry despite the abv. Really good.

Dark brown pour with amber highlights and a creamy tan head. Roasty malt, coffee, chocolate and dark fruit in the aroma and flavor. A little thin on the palate, but very tasty and highly drinkable. A touch of hops on the otherwise slightly sweet finish. Very good!

Smells of coffee, aniseed, and sweets. Pours black with a thin mocha head. Rich roasted flavor with notes of dried fruits. It is quite delicious.

22oz bomber: This one pours an opaque dark brown. there was a decent tan head on it, but it dropped away rather quickly. It leaves no lacing. Really rich aroma. Chocolate and maple are predominate. The taste is quite complex. Hints of chocolate, roastiness, coffee, some dark fruits. There are some hops in there that balance out the sweetness nicely. This is a really good brew.
