Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

22oz bomber: This one pours an opaque dark brown. there was a decent tan head on it, but it dropped away rather quickly. It leaves no lacing. Really rich aroma. Chocolate and maple are predominate. The taste is quite complex. Hints of chocolate, roastiness, coffee, some dark fruits. There are some hops in there that balance out the sweetness nicely. This is a really good brew.

Bottle: dark black with a frothy tan head, aroma of roasted malts and chocolate (reminds me a bit of Storm King), taste is malty, sweet, chocolate, medium mouthfeel, very slight bitter finish. Much better than I expected after I hear a while back that this beer didn’t impress.

Pours black with significant red edges and a small head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel and chocolate. Flavour begins with chocolate, then roasted malts and caramel sweetness, to end up with a frutiness from raisins and plums. Quite nice.

Bottle. [thank you, myrup]
Pours deep ruby red, bordering on black. A small, rather fizzy light-beige head on top. Sweet aroma, lots of dark chocolate and dark maltiness. Some toffee as well. Fine mouthfeel, medium carbonation, medium creaminess. Flavour is a bit vinious at first, some sweet maltiness. Then a great, balanced aftertaste hits me, medium roasted malts, lovely dark chocolate and chewy maltiness. Wonderful finish.

Dark brown appearance with a tan head. Aroma is of chocolate malt. Flavor is bittersweet chocolate with some toffee in the finish. Body is a little thin but it doesn’t detract from the flavor too much. Overall, definitely an enjoyable beer if not quite amazing.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black with a small off white head. Nose is malt/semi sweet chocolate. Palate is a bit thin/dry with minimal carbonation. Could’ve used a bit more body. Flavor was malty with chocolate background. Nice brew, but a bit one dimensional.

Black with a fizzy white head. Chocolate malt aroma. Sweet milk chocolate and fruit taste with a smooth finish. Alcohol deceptively well hidden.
