Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Bottle from Wine Warehouse Charlottesville. I had been holding off on this, intending to save my Tsarina Esra as my first baltic at rating 400. But, Numenor ruined all that by giving me a taste of my first baltic at rating 300. So, I decided to go ahead and give it a shot. Pours a dark brown with a small head... almost nonexistent. Bitter aroma of coffee and roasted malt. Very similar taste, with a creamy texture. A little too thin bodied that I’d like.

Muddied, almost opaque root beer body topped by a nice light tan head. Aroma is a bit thin, light roasted malt, hints of cocoa. The flavor is too vegetal for my taste. Cut back on the beans... Very thin almost insipid body. The vegetable astringency develops even more as the beer warms, further detracting from an already disappointing brew.

22oz bottle, thanks to Drewbeerme for this. Hazy, dark brown with off-white head. Nose is of dry dark roasted malt with subtle pine hops. Flavor is dark malt with dark fruit, medium sweet. Medium bodied and creamy. Nt bad.

There are some nice qualities with this one, but the body is a bit thin so it leaves the good chocolate and brown sugar flavor falling short. The color is a nice blackened ruby, though.

Bottled, thanks for sharing, iowaherkeye. We had this next to an infected old bottle of Perkunos Hammer. The Perkunos was great when it was fresh as I was lucky enough to have it a few times. This one had a black body with a yellowish khaki head. The aroma was milk chocolate and sweat. There was also some bread crust. The taste was strong milk chocolate with some caramel and tobacco notes. Decent.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color with a large dark tan head. The aroma was a nice mix of sweet chocolate, vanilla and caramel. The flavor was a rich and complex mix of sweet malty chocolate, vanilla and licorice with a lightly bitter roasty middle and a long sweet chocolate & licorice finish. The mouthfeel was amazingly silky and smooth for not being overly thick. Remarkable.

Bottle sampled. Pours dark with a small beige head. Aroma of roast, chocolate, and dark fruit. The flavor is roasted, chocolate, well blended alcohol, dark fruit, and finishes with a good hop character.
