Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

22oz bottle fresh. The pour is a glossy black, with a thin head of creamy froth. The aroma is different that what I remember of the Perkuno’s Hammer. There isn’t that sourness that was so strong in the Heavyweight version. The aroma of this beer is slightly fruity/wineish which is reminiscent of the Hammer, but there is more of a sweetness and a touch of hops that was undetectable in the original. The flavor is similar in character. The body is quite nice, and the overall presentation is pleasant and unique.

Pitch black, thin with a small head. Aroma of chocolate malt. While cold it is dominated by roated malt, rich toffee and molasses, as it warms some light fruitiness comes out, but so does some unpleasant chalkiness and uncomplimentary hop flavors. I dont know this style well, but this one is forgettable.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thin brown head - about 70% opaque. Aroma of fresh hops, roasted malt, grass, green coffee and some light nuts. Full-bodied; Sweet caramel and nutty flavours showcase the sugar, while roasted malt, a touch of spices (anise & nutmeg) show some body. Aftertaste shows a lot of alcohol and a very bittering taste from the malt and nuts. Overall, a decent beer - but truly nothing to be happy about. I’d easily choose another one from this style. For instance, at my store - there were two baltic porters available - this and a Zywiec Porter, which is hands down much better that this one. Still worth trying if you love Victory or want to try another Baltic. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased earlier today on 11-April-2008 at Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia. The reading on the bottle shows: Consume by 31 December 2008.

Bottle: Brown pour with bits of crimson. Smaller beige head. Aroma is a little bit of ligh roast and bits of fruit. Flavor is roasty, smokey, and has a raison feel. Not quite what I had hoped for in this baltic...

22 oz. bottle - thanks to hank1980 for this bottle as i wanted it right when i heard about the release; pours opaque black with fading off-white head; rich aromas - soapy, nutty and mildly roasted; thin body and dry finish; high expectations lead to a minor disappointment, but definitely a solid baltic porter

Bottle: Blackish mahogany, nice off-white head and lacing. Nose of light grape, raisin, some bitter baker’s chocolate. Flavor of light alcohol and a creamy malted milk ball note. Finishes strong in alcohol . Ok but very mellow for the style. Thanks Jake!

(USA) This Brew was poured into a tall EKU glass. Wonderful dark brown color with a Lg- tan head. There is a brown sugar / molasses aroma with a smoky dark malt taste !!! The finish is very good. This is my second favorite Victory beer.
