Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

THOUGHTS: A nice beer but a bad re-creation of Perkunos Hammer. It was missing that sourness and had too much hops. TECHNICAL: On tap at the Drafting House in Exton at the beers release party. Poured a dark brown with orange highlights and a light tan head. The aroma was chocolate syrup and sweaty yeast along with pine and citrus hops and some dark, sour fruit. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and bitter while the finish was moderately sweet and bitter and moderately acidic. The flavor was chocolate syrup, citrus and pine hops and some fruit, but not that much. The medium body was syrupy with fizzy carbonation and a moderate to heavy astringent finish.

22oz bomber. Deep amber color, almost black. Aroma is fresh but subdued, some hops and chocolate noticeable. Rich, sweet, and creamy in taste. A very complex finishing beer, with lots of toffee and caramel notes. This is a great Baltic porter.

Bomber->English Pint: pours an average, light brown, but diminishing head atop of a almost completely, black body. The malt aroma is light, has a hint of cookie, and caramel. The hops are lemony, and the yeast has a tinge of cheese. The body is medium, the texture is thick, no carbonation, and the flavor’s duration is long; sweetness is light, as is acidity and bitterness. Perhaps a hint of coffee in the taste as well. I enjoyed this beer and it’s definitely a winner in my book.

22 oz bottle via Johnnykat (out of nowhere he sends this..what a great kat!! Thanks!). Nose is roasty and a bit fruity. Pours a midnight black with a nice head. Taste is roasty with some fruity notes. Body is light/medium, carbonation is just right. A good beer, but doesn’t taste like a Baltic Porter..more like a Robust or Imperial Porter. Good beer either way.

Excellent beer in an under-rated style. Dark pour and nice roasted aroma. Very malty flavor that was very pleasant on the palate. Smooth on palate and excellent finish.

Clear dark brown body with a medium creamy tan head. Sweet malt, light molassass and an almost postage stamp background. Light roasty and caramel flavor, some molassas hints. Medium body with medium low carbonation and a caramel ending.

Courtesy kenb 3/15. I’m partial to this style, obviously, but this one didn’t quite hit the spot for me the way others of this style have. (I’m going based on memory, but I remember it coming out to a flat 4.)

Thanks to Beerlando for sharing this beautiful beer. Pours into a snifter thick and black with minimal head. Aroma is very big, sweet malt, candy, roasted grains. Taste is smooth malty, roasted grain and more sweetness. Finishes smooth and clean.
