Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Pours a deep, dark, clear burgundy with strong red/purple hues, and a thin tan head. Smells very roasty, sweet, and creamy, with some bitterness and a touch of toffee. Cocoa, chocolate, and coffee aromas also open up. The taste is up front, in your face lager, super dark and rich, with a balance between crisp and creamy. Chocolate and coffee flavors, with smooth sweetness and strong roastiness. Slightly sulfuric aftertaste. Over carbonated in the mouth. Overall, a great brew, but no Perkuno’s Hammer.

Courtesy of Degarth. Pours deep dark brown with dark tan head. The aroma is musty sticky prunes, dates and sweet blueberries that ride along with a layer of roasty malts and a mild vague earthiness. Nice even flavor to start with some roasty malts followed by prunes, dates and hints of sweet blueberries. Into the finish I get more roasted malts and mild chocolate malts. Nice flavorful brew but coming up short for a Baltic Porter style wise. Sure enjoyed it though.

Dark reddish brown, nearly black pour, with a medium ring of lace - aroma of vanilla and roasted malts, a wee bit of blueberry, a bit of metallic character - medium-bodied, and fairly creamy - quite sweet, with vanilla extract being the most dominant flavor - some roasted malt, coffee and light tobacco - some berry and whipped cream flavor - remains way too sweet throughout, especially in the finish (starts to get a sticky, melted marshmallow quality to it) , without enough roast or bittering hops to balance it out - Perkuno’s Hammer this ain’t.

From bottle : Pours very dark, with a good amount of carbonation, and a finger of light brown froathy head. A very roasty nose, with malts and sweet fruits. Taste is sweet roasted malts, with a little bit of the fruits, and definite tangy toward the end, and a sticky finish. Medium mouthfeel, with a smooth palate untill the end, where it gets sticky. Aftertaste is roasty, and tangy. My first Baltic Porter and i must say im impressed.

Pours a near opaque with very faint red highlights and a small and quickly dissipating beige head. Nose is heavily oxidized, with a strong copper quality, and a roasted malt scent. Pretty rich and full on the palate, with a strange melange of musty coffee, blackberry jam, and old leather in various stages before finishing respectably bitter, though it seems due as much to the alcoholic strength as the bittering hops. Just can’t say I’m too impressed with this brew; perhaps I’m just not in the mood.

Bomber thanks to jrob_21. Pours a dark black that shows red when exposed to light. The aroma is mostly sweet candy and alcohol. The taste is mostly sweet brown sugar and fruit. Also some chocolate, bitter hops, and a generally smooth and silky body. Also some tobacco thrown in. Pretty good. Besides the aroma there is little notice of alcohol beyond the warmth.
