Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

More spoils from Ryan--I can no longer in good conscience discuss fantasy sports conquests on this location... pitch black body with a two-finger brown head... head is creamy and settles evenly--adorns a Hop Devil glass with attitude... malty presence is obvious.... no scent of peas or olives (!?).... clean and a bit toasted... smooth, medium-bodied, slightly effervescent at the throat... strangely no hints of alcohol mixed beautifully... consistent malty character with a toffee sweetness at its finish.... exhales reveal some grapefruit/citrus hints, soft and understated.. my first opportunity to taste a Baltic porter, I can admit my expectations were somewhat accurate, but the citrusy finish is a surprise. What isn’t is Victory crafting another winner...

Pours dark brown with ruby hues and a mostly receding tan head. Notes of bready malt, sticky caramel, chocolate, cola, rum, and raisins. Full bodied and lightly sticky with soft carbonation.

Bottle. Bit too warm for a baltic, but I had wanted to try this for a long time. Poured black with thick tan head, much lacing. Strong malty aroma with toffee and chocolate. Strong flavour, with malt, fruit, chocolate overtones. Lasting finish with alcohol warmth. A winner, even in summer.

Bottle shared with tashi at the Rake, 24th July 09. Dark brown with an off-white head. Woody, oxidised aroma. Slightly milky too. Lots of heavy caramel flavours. Flat palate doesn’t help. A bit of a let down.
