Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Bottle @ RBESG Grand Tasting 2009. Malt, roast and dark chocolate in the aroma. Grapes in the vinous flavor with roast and molasses. Sweet with red berries. Likeable.

RBESG Sheffield 2009 Grand Tasting at the Harlequin. Deep reddish brown colour, small off white head. Aroma of ryebread, some chocolate. Flavour is sweet, rye, like a German bock, caramel. Medium bodied. Wouldn’t call this a Baltic Porter.

22 oz. bomber. Pours clear dark brown, but definitely not opaque. Little head on the pour and none thereafter. Fragrant aroma of expresso, toffee and dark fruit. Flavor has similar characteristics, with toffee and dark fruits being prominent. Fairly dry, but not bitter. Warming but no overt alcohol. Extremely drinkable and balanced. Palate is medium-full, with low carbonation but still a smooth mouthfeel. This isn’t the type of baltic that I’ll stash for years in the cellar, but it is pretty damn nice drinking

On tap at The Beer Engine, poured into snifter. Poured a dark brown with auburn tinges around the sides. Aroma: dried mud, warm/damp animal in a sweet barnyard way -- weirdly made me sentimental because it reminded me of my old dog. Oaky/musty flavor with a smooth mouthfeel. This is some good shit.

Bomber from Utobeer. Very dark brown/black. Lasting very dark beige head. Lots of choc and dry malt on the aroma. Malty porter to be honest. Yes some choc, but more kinds of malt in here too. If anything a bit staleish on the malts. Some liquorice later. It has some drinkability. Not too much alcohol burn, but some on the finish. But what scores to give it? Aroma is ok but not overly intense, nice dark colour, ok in mouth, a bit tingly from the carbonation, bit of acidity even. Flavours are good, some prune fruits. OK, decent, but nothing spectacular.

A Mes rate. Bottle at home thanks to Tom.
Chocolate brown and what head there was, vanished completely in seconds. Full on peat salt seaweed aroma. Smells like it’s been in some sort of whisky barrel. Soy and chocolate in the mouth with some odd vegetal notes. Rather dull but tasty enough and very drinkable. Quite thin but works with the flavours pretty well.

No head left; black beer with mossy shine. Oatmeal, fresh wholemeal bread, very slightly roasted. Again wholemeal, liquorice, Malzbrew in the finish. Very well-bodied, roasted and balanced. Does not show its 8.5%. To hell if this can be called real Baltic Porter, it is a pretty good beer in its own right; I like it. Big thanks to CK!

On tap at Naked City’s Victory Night for SBW. Pours dark red with a nice beige head. Aroma is roasty malts and coffee. Flavor adds chocolate, banana, and caramel. Smooth, roasty finish.
