Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Nice coffee/toffee aroma, pungent, with a definite bean note. Good brown head. Flavor has a great roastiness, balanced, and is very unique. The beans come through in a big way and give this beer a fantastic body and some nice flavor notes and complexities that I doubt would there otherwise. A big step up from Perkunos, if you ask me, and an absolute delight to drink.

[1252-20080404] 1pt6floz bottle. Dry-roasted fruit malt aroma with burnt dry coffee grounds. Clear, dark ruby black body with a medium-lasting creamy tan head. Sweet super roasted malt flavour with noticeable alcohol. Full body is bitter, smooth and dry. Nice but could be have a little more ooomph and be less dry.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown body with a small, short-lived beige head. Smell: Dark malty aroma with notes of chocolate, toffee, molasses, smoked figs, and green herbs. Taste: Roasty dark maltiness with hints of chocolate and toffee with a fair amount of sweetness. Thinned out molasses. Figs and black cherry fruitiness. Taste of spearmint. Hint of smoke. Bright floral hoppiness with a medium bitterness. Flavor of fruit and mild coffee with plenty of alcohol warmth on the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Moderate carbonation. Slight stickiness to the mouthfeel. Drinkability: Pretty good. But don’t take my word for it - drink and enjoy!

Bottle, shared by and courtesy of Jerc and Mabel. Black, lots of red hues. Creamy brownish tan head. Nice aroma - sweet, roast, slight metallic notes. Very smooth body. Good taste - rich malt, sweet. Simple, not the "oomph" or complexity I was expecting. A solid straightforward Baltic Porter.

Pours to a deep rusty ruby brown body with a thin light tan head. The aroma is dark malts and caramel or crystal malts. Some dark fruits. The flavor is rich dark malts and fruits. Sweetened dark chocolate. Not overly complex. Acetic malts. The palate is dry and mouth puckering.

From bottle. Light smoky-sweet aroma, with some Twizzlers, woodchips, light alcohol vapor, and some herbal notes. A bit of chocolate. Dark brown-black clear, with thin light-tan foamy lacing head. Medium watery body with medium to light carbonation. Starts with a nice licorice-chocolate malty sweet character, with mild smoke, almost like peat. There’s some acetone character, too, with some raw sugar and light alcohol. A bit of warming. Bitterness from roasted malt and a bit of chalky hops comes in to finish, but leaving predominantly a mild coffee-chocolate coating on the tongue.

22 oz bottle, via puzzl. Pours a very dark brown body with a large fizzy light brown head. Lots and lots of carbonation here. Fairly light on the nose, there’s roast, caramel, a little coffee, and an earthy almost dirt like note that must come from the addition of the peas. Pretty nice flavor though, roasty with bitter chocolate, dark fruits, and burnt toffee lead off, a little on the sweeter side. Then the alcohol really makes itself known before the finish comes around. Finishes with some licorice, burnt malt, chalk, and a unique earthiness. Fairly full and thick bodied, it coats the cheeks and lingers on for a good long time. The carbonation is a little high, but the more it sits the better that’s getting. It is fairly soft though, not prickly at all. I guess overall that it’s a decent enough beer, not of the same caliber as Perkunos was, but passable on it’s own. Not a beer that I’d go pick up by the case as I did with Perkunos though.

Bottle. Deep ruby-brown colour with a thin tan head. Takes a bit for the aroma to open up, but when it does, it reveals a lot - toffee, dark malt, dark fruit, some oily notes, and a slight herbal/medicinal edge. Medium bodied. A fair amount of coffee and roasted malt in the flavour, along with some dark sugar and oak, and a moderate amount of hops to finish. Some alcohol warmth as well, but not too much. Pretty solid.
