Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Bottle. Sweet malty aroma, brown sugar with raisin and a subtle stroke of chocolaty smoke. Slight herbal/licorice note. Coke pour with a noisy, soapy tanned head. Taste has obvious alcohol and chocolate and a medium-strength, earthy smoke tone. Yeasty component reminds much more Heavyweight than anything Victory has put out; indeed its Perkunonian predecessor is readily evident, though slightly tweaked (for the worse - the fruit just isn’t there). Thick, viscous malty body with a dry chocolate aftertaste, reminds a bit of DFH’s Palo Santo but less fumey / whisky-like. I’d keep this from the top shelf, but it’s still a warm, rounded offering that’s sure to please.

Bottle. Translucent red-brown body, thin buff ring/head. Nose of toffee, caramels, and hot alcohol. The body is bock-like and relatively dry at cool temperatures, sweetening with warmth, and features predominantly musty breads, toffee, chocolate, and toast, with sharp alcohol notes and a long, bitter finish. I’m not feeling the love.

The aroma is dark fruit, alcohol, dust, dirt/earth and roasted grains. The body is deep black and holds a wispy tan head. The fore is dark chocolate, dry roasted malt and sweet cream. It then goes earthy/dusty/dirty before offering a bit of dark fruit sweetness. It doesn’t remind me a lot of the Perkunos Hammer. It’s dryer than I remember the Hammer being and while I get some dark fruit sweetness this is much more dry and earthy tasting.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Dark black pour with a thick tan head. Aroma is very dark and roasty with some burnt malts and coffee aromas. Flavor is very dark as well. Lots of roasted and burnt malts, earth, coffee, alcohol, and some licorice. Very rich and flavorful.

Deep red mahogany color with a big beige head. Nose of cereal grains, raisen, plum, and ash. Lots of fruit, with cherry, raisen, plum, banana, something spicey, lightly toasted bread and some earth hops that got overtaken in the finish by the burnt toast. Nice beer.

On tap for Victory Release party at the Drafting Room in Exton. Deep brown in color with a little head. Malty caramel roasty aroma. Chocolatety caramel flavor. Roasty nutty notes. Medium bodied. Finish is dry. Decent beer.
