Roasty malt nose, a whiff of smoke, dark chocolate. Nice milk chocolate flavors, roasty and a touch of smoke. Some fruity notes develop as it warms. Medium body, mildly creamy. I never had the pleasure of trying the original, so I can’t compare, but this is pretty nice. jeffc666 (1898), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | May 7, 2008 Muddied, almost opaque root beer body topped by a nice light tan head. Aroma is a bit thin, light roasted malt, hints of cocoa. The flavor is too vegetal for my taste. Cut back on the beans... Very thin almost insipid body. The vegetable astringency develops even more as the beer warms, further detracting from an already disappointing brew. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 29, 2008 Thanks abcfan. Pours a dark ruby brown with a one finger light tan frothy head. Looks lighter than I would have expected. The aroma is sweet, caramel, smokey, meaty, light raisin. The flavor is roasty and sweet, peaty, light smoke, warm, alcohol, meaty. The palate is pretty carbonated. Pretty good but not up to par with some others in its style. Beerdedone (1888), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA

Clear (when held to the light), deep mahogany with a small, persistent head. Aroma is an odd mix of wood, chalky caramel, fruity-herb coffee and chocolate. Flavor is chalky cocoa with some light apple-cherry and char. Finish of coffee, char, marshmallow and light alcohol. Medium body is a little too watery and frothy, but nicely dried by some roasty flavors. stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA

The flavor is roasted, chocolate, well blended alcohol, dark fruit, and finishes with a good hop character. RAYBOY01 (1873), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 28, 2008 Rich brown pour with a robust head. The nose is raisiny with hints of grapes and roasted grains. The flavors are mildly roasty, less so than I was expecting. Some coffee/chocolate notes and hints of dark fruitiness. A little too spritzy for me. Overall a very drinkable dark lager, but not very complex or particulary deep. Thanks be to Frankenkitty CharlesDarwin (1873), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 4, 2008 On tap at Zeno’s Pub - State College, PA. Aroma yields warm caramel to softened chocolate. Cracker crust provides support. A subtle, warm animal in the nose. Tangy. Decent. Pours an appreciable deep mahogany and teak, with fading bubbly head in coffee-cream. Flavor moves in sneaky bursts of caramel, lager malt, and toned fruits. Mildly complex and delicate. Lays off the roasted qualities for a more reserve presentation of caramels, creamy malts, and brown sugars. A minty leaf of hop glows through. There’s a curt tanginess to malt that cuts my appreciation short and leaves me wanting a longer sustaining complex of darker character. A great balance of sugar and alcohol. I don’t know what I’m looking for in this beer, but it just doesn’t wow me as much as I had hoped.
