Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

nice nearly black coloration with a reddish tint, ok head, ok lacing. aroma of roasted malt with definite nuttiness to it. pretty decent brew here from victory- nice smoking roasted quality to it, though the mouthfeel is a little watery and the flavor isn’t very complex, which keeps this from being an upper 90s brew. really nice overall though.

Courtesy kenb 3/15. I’m partial to this style, obviously, but this one didn’t quite hit the spot for me the way others of this style have. (I’m going based on memory, but I remember it coming out to a flat 4.)

Pours an opaque brown with a light brown long lasting head. Very weak bread dough and coffee aroma; almost no smell at all. Smooth and inoffensive flavor. Taste of coffee, toffee and dark fruit juice. Mild hop aftertaste. pretty good - - not over the top. Surprisingly, no alcohol taste.

Bottle: Dark amber/brown color pour...huge aroma of figs, raisins, chocolate and coffee with some mild vanilla and cream notes present as well. A bit hot in the taste with flavors of caramel, chocolate and dark fruits present. Pretty good.

Deep brown in color with a thin head that dissipated quickly. The nose has aromas of chocolate, plum, fig and spice. In the mouth it was medium to full-bodied and semi-concentrated with a slightly dry finish. Fairly simple but nice.

pours opaque with a rousing mocha head. Decent burnt malts and a whispy hop dryness. Solid baltic porter.

Pours a dark nut brown color with a thin tan head that fades as soon as you take a sip and the oils from your nose hit it. The aroma is nice and robust and you can smell the chocolate malt with a blend of barley. The flavor is nice and creamy with a smooth texture and a robust finish. You can really taste the hops and chocolate malt in the after taste, it is like having a chocolate hop bar in your mouth. Overall it has great carbonation with a nice balance of malt and hops.

Pours a translucent brown with mahogany edges when held to the light. The head is tan, medium and retains well. The nose is filled with impressions of milk chocolate, nougat, toffee and mixed berries. The flavour is similar, but it has a slightly metallic, sour tang, that isn’t offensive somehow. The aftertaste is nicely smokey with nice tones of roasted malts and earthy, citric hops. That metallic tang persists into the finish and aftertaste along with some peppery spice. The mouthfeel is creamy, full and slightly chalky towards the bitter drying finish.
