Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Draught at debut party: Aroma of malts, roasting, chocolate, bread, salt, and a bit off sweet lactic acid. Poured dark brown with hints of orange and ruby in color and a small tan head that diminished quickly. Lightly sparkling. No lacing. Lightly sweet flavor. Flavor of chocolate, malts, dates, and sour mix. Medium to full body. Average carbonation. Sour finish. Hides 8.5%abv very well.

Deep red mahogany color with a big beige head. Nose of cereal grains, raisen, plum, and ash. Lots of fruit, with cherry, raisen, plum, banana, something spicey, lightly toasted bread and some earth hops that got overtaken in the finish by the burnt toast. Nice beer.

Black, with a red tint. Aroma is a nice mix of coffee and red wine. Flavor is also a mix of coffee and red wine, maybe a lttle on the sweet side, plus a hint of chocolate. Nicely sweet at the finish. Very tasty.

Quite enjoyed this. ChocOmaltOsweetNbitter. Bit more on the sweet than bitter and not overly roasty, but all in all very appealing. Thanks all over again Mr. Doug

Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse - 22 oz bomber. Pours a dark brown - similar to the color of black olives. Decent sized off-white head that sticks around a while. Sweet aroma with some raisiny notes, a bit of molasses and some briny olive likes notes. Flavor has the same sweet notes with some chocolate, molasses and a touch of prunes. Mouthfeel is decently thick. Overall, a most decent Baltic Porter.

Bottle. This is a swirling carbonated mess of dark goodness, with a boiling cauldron of thin off-white foam. The aroma is fairly restrained and just plain beery. The flavor is also fairly plain-jane, but still somehow delicious. Definitely silky smooth, velvety even, this delivers a very even keel of warm chocolates, a bit of roast, and even a hint of lactose. Nice. Where’s the cheesecake? (#3321, 2/11/2008)

No head left; black beer with mossy shine. Oatmeal, fresh wholemeal bread, very slightly roasted. Again wholemeal, liquorice, Malzbrew in the finish. Very well-bodied, roasted and balanced. Does not show its 8.5%. To hell if this can be called real Baltic Porter, it is a pretty good beer in its own right; I like it. Big thanks to CK!
