Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Bottle. Sweet malty aroma, brown sugar with raisin and a subtle stroke of chocolaty smoke. Slight herbal/licorice note. Coke pour with a noisy, soapy tanned head. Taste has obvious alcohol and chocolate and a medium-strength, earthy smoke tone. Yeasty component reminds much more Heavyweight than anything Victory has put out; indeed its Perkunonian predecessor is readily evident, though slightly tweaked (for the worse - the fruit just isn’t there). Thick, viscous malty body with a dry chocolate aftertaste, reminds a bit of DFH’s Palo Santo but less fumey / whisky-like. I’d keep this from the top shelf, but it’s still a warm, rounded offering that’s sure to please.

dark brown/black with large but quickly disappearing head. flavor of crystal, chocolate malt with a fruity finish of a lager yeast, which adds a nice finish. not a lot of alcohol presence for the high abv. a very good beer, i wish i had a pekuno’s hammer to compare it to

Pours deep mahogany brown with a thick beige head. Aromas of roasted coffee, some sweet creamy malts, and a bit of smokiness, but overall a bit subdued. Flavors of sweetened coffee and anise right up front, with a bit of molasses and slight notes of caramel and dark bitter chocolate coming through mid-palate. Slightly fruity throughout, and lightly alcoholic towards the finish. Palate is medium, a bit sticky, and slightly alcoholic.

[1252-20080404] 1pt6floz bottle. Dry-roasted fruit malt aroma with burnt dry coffee grounds. Clear, dark ruby black body with a medium-lasting creamy tan head. Sweet super roasted malt flavour with noticeable alcohol. Full body is bitter, smooth and dry. Nice but could be have a little more ooomph and be less dry.

Bottle from Canals. Nice Dark brown pour with thin beige head(good lacing). Caramel and roasted malts are definetly detected in the nose. Strong roast taste with a splash of coffee and mild hop finish. It was good but a little too heavy on the roast taste. Could have been blended a little better. Example Olfabrikken or Koff.

From Bomber - Dark, with a medium weight tan head which dissipates quickly. LIttle or no lacing on the glass after it’s gone. The aromas are subdued, the taste carries a lot of soy and bitter chocolate. I would have expected this to be thicker from the looks of it but it is medium in weight. a solid brew.
