Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Sampled this on tap at the debut at Drafting Room Exton, Jan 5th 2008. Sampling a 22oz bottle tonight. Pours ruby-brown with a large khaki head that fades to a thin cover. Aroma is big on chocolate, with oats, herbs, and smoke. Roasted chocolate malt, dark fruit and oats are the primary flavors, with some toffee and herb in the background. Thinner bodied than I expected. Finishes fairly sweet. I think I have a bottle of Perkuno’s left in the cellar; I’ll have to sample it side-by-by side with Baltic Thunder some day.

Pours with a long-lasting tan head over a clear, dark brown body. Rich malt aroma. Light chocolate flavor, but it needs more. Thin. Easy drinking, but I was looking for more from this one.

Pours an opaque brown with a light brown long lasting head. Very weak bread dough and coffee aroma; almost no smell at all. Smooth and inoffensive flavor. Taste of coffee, toffee and dark fruit juice. Mild hop aftertaste. pretty good - - not over the top. Surprisingly, no alcohol taste.

Pours a pretty, deep reddish-black with a nice-sized head. Looks a little thin as it goes into the glass. Light aromas of dark chocolate and rough grains. Raisin, yeast and bourbon on the palate, which is rather short, but intense. Dry, empty finish.

Poured a dark brownish/mahogany with a fizzy off-white head. Aroma is somewhat faint, slightly fruity and flowery with a bit of weak coffee and alcohol. Flavor is nicely bitter and roasty with a strong roasted coffee flavor, a bit of fruit, some alcohol, finishing lightly bitter with a slight coffee finish. Body feels a bit thin for the strength of the beer. Flavors are all right, but I expected a bit more character from an 8.5% beer. I’m glad they’re paying homage to Perkuno’s Hammer, but that was a superior brew, in my opinion.

Ah Victory. Usually you do me right. And, granted, this beer is not a wrong. But it somehow doesn’t live up to expectation. It doesn’t have the intensity I’d expect from this style or from you. I know you just build a new brew pub. And I know we screwed up by not stopping by when we were in Pennsylvania. But come one. This beer could be more chocolate-y. Richer. Fuller. It’s good, but not your best..

Pours to a deep rusty ruby brown body with a thin light tan head. The aroma is dark malts and caramel or crystal malts. Some dark fruits. The flavor is rich dark malts and fruits. Sweetened dark chocolate. Not overly complex. Acetic malts. The palate is dry and mouth puckering.
