CaptainCougar (7132) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - APR 17, 2011
Growler shared by MrChopin: Pours a clear deep copper mahogany with a spotty-lacing froth of light tan head. Has a lightly sweet toasty pale malty nose with a good amount of piny aroma hops. Starts with pretty good fullness and sweet toasted maltiness with some resiny citrusy hop balance before a drier bittersweet finish. A smooth and drinkable black IPA, but could have a more pronounced hop profile.

Growler courtesy of MrChopin. The pour is a clear, reddish maroon (not black) with a big, yellow, sheen head. Very nice retention. Aroma is meaty, cinnamon, lemon, Victory’s signature biscuity/cracker malt, black cherries. Taste is spicy, piney, bitter, meaty, sharply bitter, toasty. Palate is oily, full, bitter. Very nice! Not really black, or even IPA though. Could be just a really good brown ale.

On tap in Philly. Mahogany with tan head. Hops, malt, slight caramelized sugar, grains and barley. Bitter, bit prickly from the booze, great long bitter finish, nice and dry, medium body, good carbonation. Interesting take on the Dark IPA.

Draft @ the brewery. Pours a brownish amber color with a small off-white head. Has a light roasted malty hoppy citrus aroma. Fruity malty light roasted hoppy bitter citrus flavor. Has a roasted malty hoppy bitter citrus finish with weak hints of licorice.

Pour is a deep ruby red, somewhat transparent and a bubbly white head. The nose is lightly smoked malt, notes of peppercorn, hints of caramel, clean citric hop in back with a touch of orange rind. The taste is malt forward at first, lightly smoked and some notes of burnt caramel. A touch doughy and nutty transitions to a citric hop, orange rind, and faint bitterness. The medium is medium, creamy on the palate, touch of driness and crisp finish. Leans to the malt but balanced and interesting.

Dark brown in color with a medium-sized khaki head. Aroma of roasted malts, toast, without an overwhelming amount of hops. I thought this fell more so on the malty side than bitter side of the flavor spectrum, which was a bit of a letdown. Good beer but didn’t do much for me personally.
