Since its arrival in 1997, our Storm King Stout has enticed folks to “discover the dark intrigue” as its label suggests. While enjoying that great imperial stout, we have been intrigued by the myriad of flavors it exhibits, and encouraged to test the limits of perception and pleasure by adding to the rich experience of Storm King Stout. So here you have such a exploration, involving Storm King Stout aged in oak barrels that once matured Kentucky bourbon. Blended to perfection, this one is surely dark and intriguing!

Bottle @ "The luxury tasting continues" shared by Countbeer. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized brown head. Aroma is malts, roasted malts, bourbon whiskey. Taste malts, a firm roastyness, firm bourbon, wood, bitter. Oh yeah I love this, roast and bourbon. Awesome! Medium to full body and carbonation. Love it!

2011 bottle..black color..mocha head...nose is as expected bourbon dominant with vanilla..coconut..char..slight cinnamon as well..mouthfeel is alright medium bodied a bit blander than anticipated but the age of the bottle probably has subdued things a bit..not quite sure how a bourbon barrel version of storm king is listed as the same abv as the regular storm king but oh well..in this rare case i prefer the non barreled age version of the imperial stout..this isn’t a bad offering but just doesn’t have the usual barrel aged imperial stout mouthfeel for my liking..alright though..

Some very sharp bourbon barrel here. Bitter finish. Some roast, dark chocolate. There isn’t a huge amount of underlying character here, or it hasn’t aged well at least. Pours black with good head and lacing. Bottle pour at Churchkey’s 5th anniversary.

"black with thin brown head. medium bodied, well carbonated, maybe a touch too much for the style, but that was expected...Storm King is the same. The difference between this and most other BB stouts is that the hops still come through, though the bourbony vanilla flavor and aroma are up front and center as well. chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, hops...nicely blended. a white whale since it came out that did not disappoint. 2010 batch. not quite with the very elite of the style, but not too far off, either. 2nd fresher batch needs to age a bit."

2011 bottle. Pours a dark brown to black with a light brown head. Aromas of oak, vanilla, bourbon, some oxidation but the beer wears it well. Taste is sweet with a decent amount of bourbon heat at the finish. Medium mouth feel and light on the carbonation. This one impressed me. If I can find some cheap still on the shelves I will buy this again.

Review 2400! 750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 11/10/2011. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lists. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, raisin, prune, vanilla, toast, toffee, oak, bourbon, pine, grass, and bourbon/oak earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, raisin, prune, vanilla, toast, toffee, oak, bourbon, pine, grass, and bourbon/oak earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roast, raisin, prune, vanilla, toffee, toast, oak, bourbon, pine, and bourbon/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and moderate hop flavors; with a very nice malt/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good barrel aged imperial stout. All around good complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and moderate hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.
