Wildly assertive, intentionally untamed and dangerously satisfying, DirtWolf Double IPA is the culmination of Victory’s double IPA series experiment with whole flower American-grown hops. With two-row German malts and a well-balanced combination of whole flower Citra, Chinook, Simcoe and Mosaic hops, this 8.7% abv brew blends the powerful citrus aroma and fruity flavors, with the piney, earthy and mildly floral characteristics found in these intriguing hop varieties. Replacing Victory’s Hop Wallop® Ale, which will take a hiatus from the market for the time being, DirtWolf Double IPA will launch the brewery’s entry into four-packs when it begins to hit markets in October". “So a wolf and a prospector walked into a bar…,” joked President and Brewmaster, Bill Covaleski. “No, in all seriousness, Hop Wallop will be missed, but isn’t necessarily gone forever. We developed that brand 10 years ago as our flavorful response to the hop-bomb vogue of the time. But as brewers who enjoy experimenting with beer styles and ingredient varieties, we looked for the opportunity to do other interesting recipes as time passed. Making the decision to put Hop Wallop aside for a few years allows us to bring this delicious new double IPA, DirtWolf, to the market in bottles.

Darkly heroic, Humulus Lupulus (hops) have empowered brews with bite and character since the 11th century. DirtWolf is a tribute to these untamed vines which rise from the earth with the voracity of a ’wolf among sheep.’ Hops have made an assertive comeback in American craft brewing. Revel in the best US varieties of hops, in their natural, whole flower form, as they bring a vital, pungent reality to the soul of a wild element in our dangerously satisfying DirtWolf. Cheers, Bill, Ron, The Brewmasters of Victory.

(bottle) Very cloudy, light orange beer with a medium, creamy, dissipating white head that leaves thick lace on the glass. Complex fruity and floral aroma; citrus and grass hops up front, blood orange, some earthiness. Fully body. Flavor of blood orange, flowers, bready malt.

12 oz bottle: Aroma is big on hops, citrus, Simcoe, grapefruit and no real malt notes in the scent. Appearance is a slightly cloudy golden with a thick white head that diminishes slowly. Taste is big on hops upfront with a grapefruit note melding into a slight pine, and ending with a sticky resin like note. Palate is medium carbonation with a sticky resin aftertaste that lingers. Overall, It’s an average Imperial IPA. Nothing really to make it stick out from the crowd. Cheers!

Victory...I don’t hear much from them...not like when they were *the* brewery to watch for in about 2003. This beer is yellow with a white head, and subdued aroma--English even. More classically West Coast in the finish, which ends particularly sweet. (at Ale Jail Anniversary Party 2014)

Pours a two finger white head that fades slowly to a ring leaving a good lace. Almost clear straw/amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Grapefruit hop nose and flavor is tart grapefruit with some caramel malt. Lingering tart/bitter aftertaste. Stretch to call this a DIPA. $3.49 for a 12oz bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, Ma.

Transfer from BA review on 10-13-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed orange-amber color with a one finger of white foamy head upon pouring. The head has a moderate level of retention fading over a few minutes to leave some foamy lace on the sides of the glass and some patches of foam on the surface of the brew. Smell – The aroma is a nice mix of sweet citrus and some grapefruit bitterness. The grapefruit aromas are actually quite nice, bringing both bitterness as well as some sweetness due to the overall grapefruit smell being of ruby red grapefruit. Mixed with these smells are some tangerine and a bit of peach and pear. A light pine aroma complements the grapefruit and with a light bready smell, the overall aroma is rather pleasing. Taste – Overall, the taste is very much as would have been expected from the nose. The taste begins heaviest with a nice ruby red grapefruit flavor. This flavor is complemented by tangerine and some caramel sweetness initially, with more tangerine coming to the tongue in the middle and at the end of the taste. With the tangerine sweetness, some lighter fruit flavors of peach and pear also come to fruition. Toward the end a bit of a pine and grassy hop flavor come to the tongue bringing a slightly different hop dimension to the brew. While the pine and grass come to the tongue, the grapefruit really surges at the end, with the combination of flavors leaving a sweet citrus and bitter-sweet ruby red grapefruit flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on average to the slightly lower side. Both are rather nice for the bitter grapefruit flavors of the brew and make for a pleasant slow sipper. Overall – This was a wonderful hopped double IPA. Tons of nice citrus in the tangerine and the huge ruby red grapefruit with other nice hop flavors complimenting and a nice creamy taste to boot. This is a very nice brew.

Hoppy aroma, some spice, wheat, malt and citrus. Taste is where it’s at. Starts with a piney hop, earth, citrus. Well balanced between the bite and malty sugars. Reminds me of a Camelopardalis. Finishes smooth and medium bodied.

Smell of hop, herbs. Cloudy amber colour, high white foamy head. Heavy aroma of hops, grapefruit, also some spruce and fruit. Bitter. Rich body, lively but soft carbon. Challenging but in a very good way.
