Wildly assertive, intentionally untamed and dangerously satisfying, DirtWolf Double IPA is the culmination of Victory’s double IPA series experiment with whole flower American-grown hops. With two-row German malts and a well-balanced combination of whole flower Citra, Chinook, Simcoe and Mosaic hops, this 8.7% abv brew blends the powerful citrus aroma and fruity flavors, with the piney, earthy and mildly floral characteristics found in these intriguing hop varieties. Replacing Victory’s Hop Wallop® Ale, which will take a hiatus from the market for the time being, DirtWolf Double IPA will launch the brewery’s entry into four-packs when it begins to hit markets in October". “So a wolf and a prospector walked into a bar…,” joked President and Brewmaster, Bill Covaleski. “No, in all seriousness, Hop Wallop will be missed, but isn’t necessarily gone forever. We developed that brand 10 years ago as our flavorful response to the hop-bomb vogue of the time. But as brewers who enjoy experimenting with beer styles and ingredient varieties, we looked for the opportunity to do other interesting recipes as time passed. Making the decision to put Hop Wallop aside for a few years allows us to bring this delicious new double IPA, DirtWolf, to the market in bottles.

Darkly heroic, Humulus Lupulus (hops) have empowered brews with bite and character since the 11th century. DirtWolf is a tribute to these untamed vines which rise from the earth with the voracity of a ’wolf among sheep.’ Hops have made an assertive comeback in American craft brewing. Revel in the best US varieties of hops, in their natural, whole flower form, as they bring a vital, pungent reality to the soul of a wild element in our dangerously satisfying DirtWolf. Cheers, Bill, Ron, The Brewmasters of Victory.

12oz bottle poured into a wide flute glass / pint glass. The aroma is a warm, pleasant, strong citrus and toffee blend with secondary floral and pine notes as well as an undertone of biscuits and earth. It’s appearance is an active, effervescent, clear oily orange with a dense, frothy, and abundant, white head that has good retention and lace. The taste is a wonderfully smooth medium high sweet with a complimentary, well blended medium / medium high bitter. The creamy texture has a smooth and foamy carbonation with a medium body. The profile is primarily caramel with a nice citrus compliment, supported by dry pine and earth notes. The finish is dry and clean with a zesty citrus grassy and a mellow bitter herb and earth (a caramel sweetness smoothes out the finish late). These flavors stay strong in the chalky aftertaste, but after a decent amount of time, it turns to a mild burnt bread crust and pine with a touch of citrus to clean up nicely with just a touch of stickiness.

Bottle from Brewer’s Haven. Been waiting for this one to arrive and get it while it’s fresh... pungent hops as soon as the cap came off. Dark orange/amber color with a finger of creamy tan head, plenty of thick lacing. Nose is rich with pungent hops; floral, citrus and resin. Tastes the same, sticky with hops. Subtle malt profile and plenty of IBU’s. For as hop forward as this is, it was remarkably drinkable. Great beer.

12 oz. snifter serving at Saucer- served a murky orange/straw color. Aroma of grapefruit and resin. Hits the mouth with a wide body, feels very HOT on the tongue from the hops (been awhile since I had that experience, thanks!), malt tastes even and not overdosed on caramel, solid hop cresent in the middle, finish is highly acidic. Nice.

On tap @ STOUT NYC. giallo ambrato carico, quasi ramato, con riflessi dorati. schiuam bianco sporco, fine poco persistente. aroma molto intenso, fruttato, agrumato (scorza di limone) floreale (ibisco) maltato, caramello, lievemente tostato e resinoso. Gusto abboccato all’ingresso, alcolico, e maltato. discretamente acidula, diventa parecchio amara nel finale. Calda, carbonata, piuttosto corposa, rotonda, con note terrose e di melassa. equilibrata ed armonica.

This is a harsher IPA than the Moving Parts 04. Resin and orange pith hops, although balances nicely with the malt.

On tap at Cafe Fiasco. Clear golden, small head. Spicy aroma, orange zest, caramel. A very kind DIPA that hides its strength well.
