Wildly assertive, intentionally untamed and dangerously satisfying, DirtWolf Double IPA is the culmination of Victory’s double IPA series experiment with whole flower American-grown hops. With two-row German malts and a well-balanced combination of whole flower Citra, Chinook, Simcoe and Mosaic hops, this 8.7% abv brew blends the powerful citrus aroma and fruity flavors, with the piney, earthy and mildly floral characteristics found in these intriguing hop varieties. Replacing Victory’s Hop Wallop® Ale, which will take a hiatus from the market for the time being, DirtWolf Double IPA will launch the brewery’s entry into four-packs when it begins to hit markets in October". “So a wolf and a prospector walked into a bar…,” joked President and Brewmaster, Bill Covaleski. “No, in all seriousness, Hop Wallop will be missed, but isn’t necessarily gone forever. We developed that brand 10 years ago as our flavorful response to the hop-bomb vogue of the time. But as brewers who enjoy experimenting with beer styles and ingredient varieties, we looked for the opportunity to do other interesting recipes as time passed. Making the decision to put Hop Wallop aside for a few years allows us to bring this delicious new double IPA, DirtWolf, to the market in bottles.

Darkly heroic, Humulus Lupulus (hops) have empowered brews with bite and character since the 11th century. DirtWolf is a tribute to these untamed vines which rise from the earth with the voracity of a ’wolf among sheep.’ Hops have made an assertive comeback in American craft brewing. Revel in the best US varieties of hops, in their natural, whole flower form, as they bring a vital, pungent reality to the soul of a wild element in our dangerously satisfying DirtWolf. Cheers, Bill, Ron, The Brewmasters of Victory.

12oz bottle. Clear golden color with a light white head. Citrus grain hops aroma. Carbonated light body. Citrus and hops up front with a grain finish. Light easy drinking but grain finish is disappointing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a light honey color. Almost like a lager, maybe a little darker. Slighly hazy. About one finger white head. Decent lacing, okay retention. Nice carbonation.

Aroma is like a fruit basket. Tropical fruits, citrus fruits, all sorts of fruits. It’s a little malty, and sweet. It smells really nice.

Taste is fruity. I pick up lots of the fruits, and even some mint. There’s some hops, but they are not front and center. It’s citrusy, and it’s sweet, it could use a touch more bitter hops. Note, I said bitter hops. This is delicious.

Mouthfeel is medium. It has a pretty high ABV, but you can’t taste it. It’s actually quite drinkable. On the palate, I can almost detect some bubble gum. It’s odd to taste bubble gum on the palate. Sweet, slightly bitter. Wow, this is nice.

Overall, this is nice. Very nice. It’s a little more rounded than I expected. I like this. I would recommend this highly. If you see it, you should really try it.

Pours a slightly cloudy, burnt orange color with golden yellow hues and a one finger, frothy white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Nice retention with streaks of soapy lace left behind. Dank, floral hop aroma with resinous oils, pine needle and grass along with a touch of citrus fruit, biscuit, crackery malt and booze. After it warms, the citrus/tropical notes stand out a bit more with grapefruit and orange peel but the nose is still dominated by earthy hops and a strong fusel alcohol/ethanol presence. Medium body and slightly oily with a blast of dry, hoppy bitterness that lingers over the pale malt, sweet fruit and boozy heat into a dry finish. Again, the flavor is dominated by bitter, earthier hops with hints of grass, dank buds, resinous oils, pine sap and spruce tip. Subtle tropical/citrus sweetness but this opens as it warms. Lots of grapefruit with some pineapple and blood orange. Very boozy with strong heat and alcohol sweetness in the finish taking away from the hop flavors. Pale malt backbone with biscuit and cracker flavor that doesn’t interfere with the hop bitterness. Decent but too boozy for my preference and the strong alcohol flavor takes away from the interesting hop character. Feels more like 10+% beer and most of the interesting flavor falls off mid-palate.

8.5%ABV. Double IPA. Poured out of the bottle a clear amber. 14ºSRM. Nose was lightly citrusy, piney. Not as bright as an IPA could or should be. Coming back at the end, you a stronger impression of orange or mandarin peel in the nose. Might have something to do with the malty sweet, alcohol and the hop. Mouthfeel is sudsy and alcholic. There are some nice biscuit like flavors. There are herbs in the palate as well with lingering notes of mint and coriander or cilantro. Dried Chinese orange peel. Finish is long, floral at first with some lily then resinous then hyssop bitter all the way to the end. The alcoholic palate helps to prolong the finish and accentuate it’s bitterness. Goes on Favorites List!

On tap tasting. Large short stemmed wine glass. Amber colour with a small white foam head. Huge aroma of hops hits you in the nose and says "I’m here!". Same with the taste. Huge hoppy flavour and a loooong lingering finish. Very nice. Only complaint was that you could taste the alcohol at the back end of each mouthful.
