jhumphries69 (714), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Sep 5, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a brilliant, rusty-looking copper with a medium-sized, short-lived, tan head. The aroma is biscuity and malty with some notes of toasted bread and subtle hints of fruit (dates). The flavor starts crisp and bready with notes of spicy hops and some residual malt sweetness. The maltiness and breadiness remain consistent throughout - from beginning to end. The sweetness is not too strong and is well-round. It is also well-balanced by a light and very clean bitterness at mid-tongue. The finish is malty and somewhat dry with subtle notes of hop bitterness and lots of dry, bready, toasty flavors. The mouthfeel is medium in body - and feels surprisingly full considering that the carbonation is also decently high. The beer isn’t spritzy but has enough gas to give a zip on the tip of the tongue and a tingle all over as the beer washes down. Overall, the beer is a decent, full-flavored, all-malt lager; but it is far from the best Oktoberfest beer I’ve had. Drinkable for sure, but not particularly special.
BeerandBlues2 (3190), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Nov 6, 2009 Bottle. Pours clear amber with a small, fizzy off-white head, somewhat diminishing with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, straw, cereal, meal), light hop (herbs), average yeast (dough) with notes of apple and plum. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness. rampmaster (314), Alden, New York, USA Nov 2, 2009 Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a big mug. There is a freshness date on the front label but I can not read it.
Appearance: The body has a deep orange amber color with very good clarity. Its head has a good two finger thickness and is just off white in color. It has very good retention and hangs on well making nice slick lacing on the glass as I drink it down.
Smell: Its nose is full off floral and spicy Pilsener like saaz hops along with some sweet bready maltiness.
Taste/Palate: There is a good bready malty base flavor with nice sweetness and mild caramel and nutty notes. Hop flavor quickly moves in with very tasty spicy/floral and grassy flavor notes. Hop bitterness is very bright and clean on the finish and well balanced to the malt. The body has a solid medium feel with smooth yet active carbonation.
Notes: This beer was very interesting and surprising. The malt was Octoberfest all the way but the hops were crisp snappy German Pilsner and they made for a very tasty combination.
beernovice39 (237), South Carolina, USA Oct 31, 2009 I like the cracker - bread thing going on here but thats about it. Guess this is not my style. neepsntatties (280), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 23, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Colour... orange-amber with a thick head. Nose... honey, noble hops and biscuits. Palate... fairly malty, honeycomb, yeast and gentle hops. cryfreedmb (112), Ocean, New Jersey, USA Oct 23, 2009 Nice head. Faint aroma but I think I served this one to cold. Taste is decent. Nothing great. Bready and yeasty. Mild hops. Smooth. Sam Adams still brews the best american made marzen in my opinion. Saarlander (1577), Saarlouis, Germany Oct 22, 2009 Light copper pour, inch or so head. Abit sticky, some malt and slight bread, some hop flavor on the aftertaste, a pretty good Marzen.
