The pure water we receive from the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek that begins its journey to us just under 14 miles from where we brew with it. We’ll be celebrating this water (insert your lite beer joke here) with our anniversary beer, Headwaters Pale Ale, due to be released February 15, 2011. Now, considering that beer is the product of four simple ingredients and the three other than water rely on water for their existence, we’ve had a fair amount of latitude in paying homage to water in our beer. So, we’ve played all of our cards deftly, bringing the hops, malt and yeast in harmony, with our great local water as the conductor in Headwaters Pale Ale.

Bottled. Pours clear amber with an average off-white head. Aroma of citrus, caramel notes of flowery and piney hops. Sweet flavor that ends up dry and decent bitter. Light to medium bodied, watery to oily texture and soft carbonation. A nice Pale Ale indeed. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I’m not sure I would have enjoyed it as much without the backstory. This beer really does seem like a celebration of the source water. Very lively mouthfeel, nice deep amber with a rolling head. Strong floral aroma with lighter notes of pine and lemon. Very, very clean and refreshing.

Served on tap at first draft. Amber red clear color with a light white head. Hops citrus aroma. Light body. Flavor is consistent but lacking. Smooth but needs more character. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma of tropical citrus hops with piney resin. Taste is a malty base beer with a primarily piney bitter hop balance and finish. Tastes like a piney bitter ipa. Not a bad beer, but a bit light palate for the amount of hops and a bit too piney bitter for my liking. Maybe some medicinal hops in there as well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz. can from Prost Beer and Wine. Mostly clear gold with steady level of carbonation. Aroma has a mild bready pale malt, weak citrus.

The flavor is that of a classic APA. But really feels dated, like this would rock if it was 2004. Just very ordinary by today’s standards. Bready malt base with light notes of citrus and mellow pine that leads into a dry texture. Body is on the lighter side of medium. Drinkable enough and it has no issues.... I maybe overly critical with this but just very plain to me.

How: bottle. Where: Old Line Fine Wine, Spirits, & Bistro. Appearance: Looks like a watered down porter, with light beige head. Aroma: Pungent earthy hop smell, very English to me. Taste: Very woody, pines, bitter to start off with. Then malts kick in. Palate: Medium body with below average carbonation. Overall: Kind of just middle to middle-high of the road pale ale.

Can from The Drinkery Derry Brilliantly clear deep golden color with a good sized long lasting frothy off white head. Lemony citrus, light sulfur, light bready maltiness. Old school, a bit bland for my hop toasted taste buds.

Tap at Oliver Twist. Herbs, grass, hay, bread and caramel. Mild bitterness and sweetness.

This is a good beer and a decent pale ale. There seems to be more hops aftertaste than aroma but it isn’t bad. I would gladly drink this again but it isn’t my favorite of the style.
