The pure water we receive from the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek that begins its journey to us just under 14 miles from where we brew with it. We’ll be celebrating this water (insert your lite beer joke here) with our anniversary beer, Headwaters Pale Ale, due to be released February 15, 2011. Now, considering that beer is the product of four simple ingredients and the three other than water rely on water for their existence, we’ve had a fair amount of latitude in paying homage to water in our beer. So, we’ve played all of our cards deftly, bringing the hops, malt and yeast in harmony, with our great local water as the conductor in Headwaters Pale Ale.

Sample at the Roc City Brewfest (Rochester), served in the taster glass provided. 19FE11.

App.: Clear deep golden with a white rim. Aroma: Wow! Big citrus, soapy, white wine hop notes, green, leafy, slightly vegetal notes, berries, nice! Palate: Medium body, moderate effervescence. Flav.: Tastes like fresh green hop buds, lemon, berries, esters, a little soap, white wine, a touch of sulphur, neat!; dry with some bitterness and a fresh hoppy finish.

Whole Foods, DC six-pack ($8.99): Pours a copper color with a white head. Aroma is of citrus hops and a teeny amount of malts. Flavor is mostly citrus hop bitterness at the front that mellows into the malty end. Doesn’t leave a heavy aftertaste, but somewhat astringent. A little earthy. The water seems very pure (even though it is from Pennsylvania... a kind of trashy state). Quite good. Nothing really novel in this beer, but a masterful example of the style.

Bottle marked "enjoy by 7.8.11." Pours clear bright orange and lively with a medium foamy eggshell head. The aromas are sweet papaya and guava, moco moco (a Bolivian fruit), sugar, and grass. NIce tropical fruity notes here. The flavor is sweet funky malt and fruit, mild bitter grass, and pine; a touch one-dimensional. Very smooth and drinkable. A nice, sessionable beer with great aroma, but whose flavor didn’t quite live up. Still, a solid brew. [624]

Overall a fantastic Pale Ale. Very floral, citrusy aroma. Nice copper pour with a medium dissipating white head. Taste is pretty good, but doesn’t stand up to the aroma. Average bitterness... Maybe a bit to watery. Good PA to session.
