The pure water we receive from the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek that begins its journey to us just under 14 miles from where we brew with it. We’ll be celebrating this water (insert your lite beer joke here) with our anniversary beer, Headwaters Pale Ale, due to be released February 15, 2011. Now, considering that beer is the product of four simple ingredients and the three other than water rely on water for their existence, we’ve had a fair amount of latitude in paying homage to water in our beer. So, we’ve played all of our cards deftly, bringing the hops, malt and yeast in harmony, with our great local water as the conductor in Headwaters Pale Ale.

I really like the aroma and the appearance of this beer. The beer smells of a damp forest. The lacing is off white, sticky and the head is rich. The beer falls flat on the palate. It falls flat and leaves a dull bitter taste. I bit of a disappointment.

Bottle from Rudat in Dortmund. The beer has got a light hazy golden-orange colour with a steady low head and medium body. Aroma of hops, spruce and citrus fruits. Taste of hops, citrus fruits, malt, pine, mango, zest, herbs and flowers. Hoppy-dry finish. Highly quaffable, enjoyed it.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden color with a nice head. Aroma of citrus and fresh fruit. Taste is a blend of fruit and bit of caramel sweetness. Nice bitterness and a fairly dry finish. Medium body, smooth and refreshing. Has a good robust feel to it. Very enjoyable APA.

Keg at Draft House. Orange, slight haze, sparkling, big foamy off-white head, thick lacing. Aroma is tangerine forward, quite a lot of rose. Body is medium, tingly carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is dry and flowery, pungent caramel, straw, grapefruit, fairly bitter which offsets the caramel nicely. Dry tonic water finish. Rock solid pale ale.

Bottle to shaker glass, pours clear amber, one finger off white head. Some lacing and retention. Aroma of citrus fruits. Taste is nicely balanced sweet caramel malts and bitter citrusy hops. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, creamy mouth feel. Finishes slightly bitter. Tasting notes of caramel, light pine, mango, grapefruit, lemon peel and tree nuts. A very nice American Pale Ale!

Bottled. Best by 12/17/14, so this is quite old, oh well. Pours slightly hazy orange golden honey color, white head. Aroma is lots of citrus notes; orange, lemon, sort of floral resinous pine character as well, Flavor is still got quite a bit of a hop kick for such an old beer. Slightly glassy bottle taste to it, but otherwise, held up really well. Citrus hops, biscuit malt backbone. Very solid. Very solid APA.
