COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The radiant energy of the sun gives life to all that we enjoy. Flowing field of barley for malting, surging vines of ripening hops and even pure, clean water owe their vitality to the sun. Just as we do. So in crafting this unique, hazy orange-hued ale, we poured in natureís great gifts of German malts and European hops to feed the dynamic yeast that we imported from Belgium. Here in the quiet tanks of Victory our yeast brought vitality to this Belgian style farmhouse ale. That energy has created impressions that range from lemon peel to black pepper, though such spices are not added. Great with a wide array of foods, count on the bright soul of Helios Ale to bring life to all of your meals!

Cloudy tangerine color in the glass -- nice white head is thick initially, but diminishes completely. Aromas of wheat and light fruit (oranges and pears) -- a deep sweetness and some earthy strains. After a hoppy bite, some nice tangy fruit and a dry finish. Alcohol is hidden throughout. Lots of flavor, but very smooth and well-integrated.

A nice belgian style beer, although it wasnít a funky farmhouse barn-like beer (ie. missed the style a little). The head was huge and it was cloudy yellow. The aroma was yeasty, bready, and spicey. The flavor was much of the same, finishing with some sweetness & candy sugar type flavors.

Bottled. Picked up at the Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. Beer was a hazy light yellow with a lot of small, dark-brown seamonkey-like particulates swirling about. The head was small, frothy, white and mostly lasting. Aroma was moderately malty with a note of toasted grain, moderately-to-heavily hoppy with notes of herbs and lemon; lightly yeasty with notes of basement and dough; light note of banana, clove and coriander. The flavor was lightly sweet, moderately acidic and moderately bitter with an average-length, lightly sweet, lightly acidic finish. The body was light, the texture was watery and the carbonation was lively. A strong offering, not as spicy-sexy as some of itís kin, but nothing to shake a stick at.

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2011 Bottle (2011). Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy medium yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers), lightly to moderately yeasty (barnyard, horseblanket), with notes of bubble gum, lemon zest, pepper, band aid, alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. What a great beer, and only $4 a bomber. Easily the best beer Iíve had from this brewery, by a substantial margin...almost unbelievable that they make this. Wish it was lower in alcohol to make it more saison-like, but otherwise very solid, enticing, wild, and fulfilling.

Bottled April 1 2005 - Cloudy yellow with a rather large foamy white head. The aroma is fresh straw, pears and some bread. A rather subdued aroma. Flavor is straw, spicy yeast, over ripe fruit, and some herbaceousness. A goodly amount of hops are still present even after a year. Bright fizzy palate. Light alcohol warmth. All in all a pretty decent Saison, not world-class but still quite good. Anotehr example of just how diverse the brewers at Vistory are.

bottle 750ml. Hazy golden w white head. Plenty of carbonation. Aroma is saison/bret w Belgian yeast & malty, caramel candy sweetness. Flavor is the same with a touch of coriander & citrus. Medium bodied. At first it seemed to have too much CO2 on the palate but that diminished as it lost its chill. It seemed a bit green tasting like it could have aged more (1 year old). There was a nice tartness & I didnít think it was too sweet. Nice creamy mouthfeel too but I probably wonít get another @ $7.50.

(750ml bottle, bottled 4/1/05) Big white head atop a cloudy straw body. Aroma is moderately sweet, pear, some hay/herbal, chalky. Taste is moderately sweet, herbal, pear/peach, light grassy. Some alcohol warming in the finish. Some stickiness, medium-full body, with some creaminess showing up as it approaches room temperature.

Thanks to Immy for grabbing this one! From 750. Pours a cloudy gold with large white head and very active carbonation. Nose is doughy with spices. Flavor is a little yeasty with more of the same spices and mildly fruity, like pear skin. A very refreshing and crisp drink.

Corked and caged 750, dated 01APR05, purchased at the brewpub. Lots of sediment noted in the bottom of the bottle. Mildly hazy yellow-gold pour with a huge white head. So bubbly that it actually sounded like I poured soda, a pretty loud fizz. Nose is certainly spicy, herbal, and fruity (summer fruits - pear, peach, nectarine) all at once. The flavors are more subtle, more muted than the nose. Certainly a lively mouthfeel, bounces off the tongue. I enjoyed it very much - now, if I can find some here in VA...

Cloudy straw colour. Dusty, spicy (anise), fruity (pear) aroma. Spicy flavour of hay, fresh bread, peach and pear, yeast (old barn) and a big rock after the rain. Itís fairly relaxed and unassertive about all of this. Itís confident and pretty and all that white picket fence stuff. Thatís the main flaw, really. All the cool saisons evoke things that donít make sense, so itís got that, but it lacks the rusticity of the best examples. A great intro saison but I prefer more esoteric examples.
