Pawola22 (3262) - Plainfield, Illinois, USA - OCT 14, 2012
On tap at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL. Pours a hazed, copper-gold colored body with a finger-width, creamy and frothy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is big campfire and smoke up front with a light meatiness. As this warms, a nice, lightly sweetened bready malt backing comes out with a light fruitiness and earthiness. Flavor is similar. Big smoke and campfire up front with a lightly sweetened bready malt backing. Some light fruit notes and earth before this finishes pretty clean and mostly dry with a light bitterness and a bunch of smoke. Lengthy aftertaste following a smooth, medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a really nice smoked beer. Very smoky, but not overly meaty or peaty with a nice bready malt sweetness and light fruitiness. Enjoyable.

Tap at Victory, Downington PA - 25/05/12. Amber with a thin white head. Mild smoke aroma, bacon, meat, frazzles a little wood. Taste follows nose allied to caramel malt, breadiness and again the rauschometer is on mild and doesn’t overpower. Light to medium body and carbonation crisp dry finish. Really enjoyed this one to finish the Victory sesh!

Draft at The Boilermaker in Philadelphia, PA. Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with golden yellow edges and a half finger white head that quickly settles.  Minimal spots of lace left behind. Slightly smokey aroma but kind of bland really. Subtle notes of charcoal and meat followed by light fruit and earthy hops. Medium bodied with a clean, crisp mouthfeel and a good balance of lighter notes and smokey aftertaste.  Earthy hops up front with some light fruit and pale malts that are countered by a lingering smokiness.  Nice roast character with light campfire notes.  Well balanced with hints of  charcoal, BBQ and smoked meats lingering in the finish.  The aroma was weak but it tastes very good.

Draft sample. Poured clear amber color with an average off-white frothy head that was mostly lasting with very good lacing. Moderate to heavy smoke malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium toasted sweet malt and smoke flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Complex good beer.

On tap at the publican in Chicago. Wasn’t expecting it to be so smokey, but it was pleasant surprise! Tasty crisp ale with the right touch of charcoal and smoked meat.

On tap at Old Toad. I struggled between believing I was enjoying a nice smoky beer or suffering through drinking a band-aid in liquid form. It was so unique, I enjoyed it to some degree either way. Not sure If something was wrong with this batch. I am a big fan of Victory so I am savoring the uniqueness of it!

Tap at Victory. Lower carbonation. Copper SRM. Small white foam. Sweet honey nose with rich maltiness. Taste is quite smokey with bacon fat and rich German bock maltiness. Palate is tangy, a bit citric with orange peel and muted smoked ham. Obviously a smoked beer- lighter palate which is nice. Huge improvement over their first smoked beer attempts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
