3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 estoppel (1028) - Buffalo, New York, USA - DEC 3, 2004
Straw body with lots of rising carbonation, dense, medium-sized white head, PNW hops and a slight sweetness in the nose. Bitter, somewhat fruity, bitter, citrus notes, bitter. Rather thin mouthfeel. Bitter. RERATE: Mouthfeel improves as it warms; some sweet malt emerges; bitterness is slightly attenuated.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 HighGravity (926) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - DEC 2, 2004
(Best by May/04/2005) The nose is very hoppy, duh. The palate is first bitter then it gets a bit alcoholic. The palate is very full and fruity with loads of citrus hop flavors. The finish is like grapefruit juice in the morning. I think if Victory brought the gravity down a little bit that this beers rough edges would come together and make for a better beer.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 MullMan (1099) - New Jersey, USA - DEC 2, 2004
very light amber-gold color, very creamy/rocky lasting off-white head. thick lacing. tons of fizz through the body. floral grapefruit aroma, but nothing more. flavor is hoppy, but surprisingly mild for an IIPA. rating are reading like a skipping CD, huh? reminds me a little of the sierra nevada harvest ale. kind of how I like regular IPAs, even though I’m back from CA. enough malt but not sticky or too sweet. well hidden alcohol. medium mouthfeel, lively carbonation, slightly sweet and hoppy finish.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 crazyvin (1706) - New York, USA - DEC 2, 2004
poured a orange-gold color with barley any head. I expected this beer to have more of an amber color but it turned out not to happen. Nice hoppy aroma with some bread like malts but hops were the main event. Hops in the flavor but not over-powering. A little light on mouth feel and stomach.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 joet (1925) - Santa Rosa, California, USA - DEC 1, 2004
Interesting. A harvest ale with earthy, mineral and bushy hop flavors. I like the lackof thick carmels that most brewers employ to counter or "balance" hop flavors. Full but not extreme bitter. Strange malt aroma that’s reminescent only of Coors. Packs a wallop for certain. Very nice beer.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Gromit (479) - Port Orchard, Washington, USA - DEC 1, 2004
Pours like a typical pilsner; nice golden color, minimal head, better lacing than usual... Not much special going on here.
Aroma is quite hoppy to say the least. Damn it seems like a pils other than the extra hops. You sure this is an ImpIPA? Smells great, but not what I’d expect from an IIPA.
Flavor is good. Very hoppy, indeed. But damn, it’s not an IIPA. I don’t know where I’d put this, to be honest, but not here. It’s a great beer, but damit, I try to rate to style and if I’m doing that this is lacking. So, it’s very well balanced with malt sweetness, (unlike most IIPAs). A bit of sharp fruits although I can’t put my finger on it (apricots?). It’s not quite citric but damn near.
Palate is thicker than a Pils for sure; more like an IPA. Very crisp and cleansing like an IPA and very thick, but not to the IIPA style. Nice, but no cigar. Overall this is an awesome beer and should be sought out, but, you know, it’s not an IIPA.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 pjk33 (389) - Sligo - Curllsville Heights, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 30, 2004
Bottle. Enjoy by April 28, 05. Today is November 30, 04. I have been waiting to get some of this stuff on the clean side of PA and was told by a Pittsburgh distributor that it was coming in. Picked up a case at MIllvale (post flood) and could not wait to try. This one pours a piss-colored dark gold that is completely clear... Hmmm.... I expected it to be more of an IPA.... Pretty big bubbled, airy head that leaves quickly, but leaves most of itself on the sides of the glass.... Hmmm.... Nose is a hoppy (not Cascade or Chinook like I expected, but more like the German or Czech PIls hops) and also a little sour smelling... Hmmm.... How did they call this an IPA, let alone a Double? Taste is bitter immediately but not a citrus hoppy bitter, rather, a Pils bitter (still great) and nice and hoppy, but not what I expected. Nice malty sweetness that arises after the tongue gets good and furry from the bitterness. It fades back to a nice hoppy flavor. Good mouthfeel and nice medium to heavy body. This is completely different than any beer I’ve had before, but another success for Victory. Good earthy, autumn leafy, dirty taste at the end. It doesn’t look like a great beer, but it is. Yahoo for Horace!!!
