duvel tulip / shiii*... i was immediately expecting something perfect, but when i popped the cap i didnít smile. egh, i turned around, though. i was expecting a grapefruit, IIPA, PNW, yaí know... explosion. but instead i received a cheesy aroma--fresh, though. so i poured it: golden yellow body with big tight and white head that diminishes into a loose and airy sort of... pillow. i take a swig. mmm. well, itís not thin, and i can taste the alcohol, but itís all not offensive. this is cheesy, but not in the social sense. itís also hoppy, yeah--floral, grapefruit. hmm. iím disappointed, and iím not sure if iíd give it a go again. but i bought a sixer, and you know... i will. :o) itís not bad. i just... expected the metaphysical!

Victory knows hops and keeps a firm handle on it in this (near?) imperial IPA. Fruity and floral in aroma and nose, refreshing and crisp in the mouth and balanced with enough malt to keep it drinkable although weighty. A good beer but a style Iím starting to doubt.

This is definetely a good IIPA...i enjoyed this. Pours a nice amber color with a medium white head. aroma is hops to the maximum and really pleasant. flavor is equally as nice. hoppy and unbalanced but nice for the style. palate is smooth and balanced.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JAN 1, 2007 December 2006. Bottle courtesy of Mabel. Rated while ringing in the New Year. Powerful hops aroma, notes of floral, citrus and an odd hint of feet. Flavour is all hops, grapefruit and muted floral notes. Hints of illegible and occassional pale malt sweetness, but the malt lacks any significant depth. Average palate. Very unbalanced, and the hoppy highlights fail to distract you from this fact as they are not as elegant as in my first sampling. Has its moments but definitely fails to live up to the original rating. 7/3/7/3/15 - 3.5<P>
December 5 2004. Draft @ Pizza Plant in Buffalo. Golden body, moderate creamy white head. BIG hoppy aroma, undifferentiated citrus and a touch of malt. Flavour starts with a huge hoppy bitterness, semi-sweet grapefruit becomes more prominent in the finish. Grapefruit and lemony citrus dominate with occasional resin cameos. Alcohol is well hidden, peeking out just a bit in the finish. Totally unbalanced, for hopheads only. Average palate. $2.75 happy hour beer price... nice. 8/3/8/3/18 - 4.0

Hops glorious hops! Grapefruit, caramel-malt with huge hops. Lemon grapefruit finish. Slight alcohol burn. Creamy body. Spicey/piney. Nice.

Too much anticipation may have spoiled this one. Cloudy amber with ample off-white head. The aroma was hoppy as expected, grapefruit, Christmas tree, spices. Medium body, smooth feel, mild carbonation. The taste was citrusy, spice infused. When I think of an Imperial IPA, especially one calling itself Hop Wallop, I expect to be smashed in the face with it like a Dreadnaught or a La Conner (Bottleworks), or a Ruination, or Hercules. This was a good IPA, drinkable, enjoyable, but it didnít impress me as a double or imperial.

Light golden color with tight head and a touch of lace. Spicy hop aroma, but isnít quite as pungent as one would expect. Flavor is exceptional, rich flavor of malt, fruity with sweet oranges, lemony hops and slight touch of pine. Very crisp and refreshing. Only taste of alcohol is at the finish. A nice brew all around. Thanks to Santa (Doclock)!

This one deserves a special rant. I was looking forward to this one forever, and was afraid I never would get the chance to experience this legendary, annual November release. I love hops, so this one got my hopes to astronomical levels. Lets just say although it missed the mark (which would have been putting this one at the top of my list), this still was excellent. Provides more of a punch than hop devil, the hops doiminate and linger on the palate for the entire experience. Flavoring is not smooth, but a mish mash of great tastes with an explosive finish. Extremely complex and delivers on the promise of providing unparallel hopiness. Overall could have been more balanced, but thatís my only real complaint. Horace "Hop" Wallop, I salute you!

A beautiful gold brown beer with nice bubbles. Really looks good. Smells sweet with citrus hops and perhaps cedar or hay. Tastes of hop goodness. Grass at first and moving to straight out bitter. Sweet grapefruit and a bitter orange peel flavor that lasts.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
clear, copper color, head is big frothy, white, somewhat lasting. aroma is dominated by the citrus hops, with a pleasant funk from the yeast iíd imagine. aroma has modest maltiness at best. flavor is surprisingly more bitter than i would have gathered from the aroma. obviously lots of citrus, and what i call the perspiration effect. clearly has some similarities to hop devil in that the malt and hop flavor profiles are not THAT different. this beer has quite a bit less sweetness than hop devil, and frankly, at times, seems a bit thin compared to its IIPA brethren. still great though.
