Commercial Description:
Horace ‘Hop’ Wallop headed West a broken man. For it was a certain Miss LuLubelle Lager that had left him, thirsting for more. Drawn by wild tales of the riches of the gold mines, Hop pressed on westward. His last nickel spent on a prospecting pan, Hop's hunger and thirst got the best of him. Two fistfuls o' barley and three of some wild and wayward hops tossed in the pan with some clear water was to be his meal. But sleep overcame him and he woke to a bubbling, cacophonous concoction. Overjoyed with the beautiful ale that he had made, Hop realized the secret of the 'green gold' he had discovered in those fresh hops. Celebrated far and wide, Hop Wallop lives on in this vivid ale with his words, "hoppiness is happiness." As our annual homage to the fresh hop harvest, Hop Wallop is a fragrant experience that delights the tastebuds. Pure gold of color, this ale offers its heady bounty of hops to the adventurous of taste. Bold, bracing and surprisingly refreshing for a strong (8.5% a.b.v.) ale, Hop Wallop lives up to its name and legacy.

Bottle. Dark golden colour with a white head. Aroma: tropical fruits, hops, citrus, orange-peel, pine, nectarins, cream, sweet lightly toasted malt. Taste: Sweet at first, then a big bitterness hits the palate. Notes of tropical fruits, sweet citrus, grape, pine, soap, a bit of alcohol.

from crackedkettle.com - hazy bronze-orange colour with a persistent and slightly beige foam; very hoppy and flowery aroma showing notes of apricots, fresh cream and grapefruit; good malt body, slightly oily and robustly bitter, quite dry and long bitter fruity finish; the hop notes stay for a long time in the mouth - a hop bomb which is never aggressive

Frothy malty head, and very hoppy body with a slight sweetness in the back. The hop bitterness is strong and through the whole beer.

Golden pour with a short-lived head and minimum lacing. Nose is pine and citrus. These are repeated in the taste with a small floral undercurrent, all of which are subsumed by the hops. The alcohol is the best-hidden of any beer I’ve tasted. Outstanding finish - the sharp hop bitterness lasted and lasted.

Pours a golden yellow with big white head that looks like ol’ Hop Wallop’s beard. Thought the color was pretty light for the style. Pleasant aroma of dark pine and citrus. Good mouthfeel with pleasantly balanced mix of light malt and bitter hops. Somewhat mild for the style, but very enjoyable, alcohol is well hidden too.

Bottle. In the glass this is golden with relatively light carbonation and a large, foamy off-white head. The aroma is really great with lots of citrus up front, predominately sour white grapefruit, very fresh. There’s some lemon and apricot in there too. Behind the citrus is some pine in the hops and a bit of a floral element. There’s a fair amount of lacework left on the glass. The mouthfeel is creamy with a medium body, a bit spritzy; this would be good on a hot day. The white grapefruit is there again in the flavour, really fresh and a bit on the sour side: very nice! Behind that is some lemon, pine, soap, orange zest, plenty of hop bitterness. The finish is not terribly long. Really, the fresh grapefruit in this alone would be enough to bring me back to this one again. Excellent.

On tap, Roadhouse in Brookline. Pours yellow orange with a small head. Aroma is soapy and flowery. The texture of this beer surprised me, thought not in a negative sense: palate is creamy -- almost chalky -- leading up to a buttery finish. In terms of flavor, this beer has much traditional soapy, lemony, and estery notes, along with a good amount of sweetness. The sweetness is a bit different, almost like a vanilla extract sweetness. I like this beer because it is a medium strength DIPA with a twist.

Bottled (CK, BB 10/2009). Slightly hazy golden-orange color, good creamy off-white head. Strong aroma of pine, grapefruit and cat piss. Very hop juicy with loads of pine, grapefruit and other fruity flavors. Medium-bodied, not extremely malty, so actually drinkability is quite ok. Also hides alcohol very well. Good beer, but maybe a bit boring, I would not drink this very often.
