4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: OCT 12, 2013 Finally got a few bottles of this from a local case store. Pours a hazy very reddish brown - almost pink when you hold it up to the light. The thin head is gone quickly and no lacing left behind. There is a thin but constant stream of slowly rising bubbles. Aroma is rich caramel with some floral hints of hops and something that I canít put my finger on. Taste matches the aroma with rich caramel and a good dose of bourbon. The barrel aging is really working well here. It doesnít quite hide the bite of Old Horizontal. Maybe a little age will smooth it out more. Finishing up the first glass - this one leaves a nice bitter on the back of the tongue that lingers long after.
Overall, this is a good one. Particularly if you are partial to Old Horizontal to begin with. Iíll have to set at least one bottle aside for while. I expect this to age nicely.
Update 12-Oct-2013: pulled another bottle of this after 9-1/2 months and it is aging well. The sharp hops have calmed down a little and the caramel is coming to the forefront. The booziness is still a little too present but it is aging nicely.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
4 oz. pour at Victory brewpub, side by side of Old Horizontal. Pours a muddy reddish brown with off white head. Bourbon, vanilla, citrus, cherry cough syrup, caramel. Highly sweet, moderately bitter. Fully, syrupy body with light carbonation. Couldnít finish a 4 oz. pour. Hope the bottle Iím aging turns out better.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
aroma on this one is outstanding: bourbon, hot toffee, woody notes. medium sweet toffee/caramel blooms into notes of lightly bitter bourbon. penultimate note is a salty kind of picklish flavor--from the oak barrel, as Iíve encountered this flavor before in barrel aged beers (e.g., in Founders Doom). finishes with some warm alcohol
sticky palate, as expected.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from a 750ml bottle into a pint glass. Nice dark amber color. No head. Aroma of typical barleywine caramels with some booze overlayed. Flavor follows. The bourbon presence is moderate. It doesn't overwhelm the beer but let you know it's there. Not much sweetness as I expected. Some lingering heat at the end. Very solid.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml caged and corked bottle. Served in a Dogfish Head snifter, the beer pours a dark reddish/brown color with a half inch light tan head. Head retention is decent, not much lacing. Aroma is nice and malty, it smells like dark fruit, oak, vanilla, bourbon, brown sugar, and caramel. The taste is similar to the aroma, the brew tastes like dark fruit, oak, bourbon, vanilla, coconut, brown sugar, caramel, candied fruit, toffee, and some booze. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, itís a bit coating and creamy with moderate carbonation. I thought this was a good brew, worth a try for sure!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750ml bottle. Pours a deep amber color with a very thin light tan head that lasted as a ring. Aromas vanilla bean and oak, along with caramel, sweet phenols, toffee and maple syrup. Tastes of dark fruits, caramel, and alcohol dominate up front. Towards the back, you get a hint of the bourbon barrel and creamy vanilla, as well as a touch of citrusy hops. Full-bodied with low carbonation.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Food and Friends in Philly.
Pours a deep garnet brown with a smallish beige head that shows great retention. Aromas of brown sugar, vanilla, hints of wood and dried fruits. There is a solid alcohol presence and a faint bit of earthy hop aroma as well. The flavor is sweet with caramel and brown sugar that is dripping with vanilla drizzle. Light dried fruits with a solid alcohol bite and hints of earthen hop to balance. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Itís a little bit alcohol hot for my tastes but it really is a fantastic beer. If it werenít so damn expensive I would have snagged another bottle.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle pours clear yellow orange with one finger white head. Malty aroma. Taste nice combination of sweet malts, bourbon, vanilla and oak. Thick palate without being syrupy. Finish dull oak and hops. Improves as it warms.
Very nice aged barleywine, quite sweet but I enjoy sweet beers. Seemed to pack more of a punch than youíd expect from the ABV.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Burnt tangerine/chestnut pour with a small latte head. Loads of toffee, vanilla, molasses, cocoa, bourbon, and oak. Incredible melding of flavors. Rich and luxurious...sticky but not too sweet. The alcohol in this was nicely hidden as well.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Exactement ce que jíavais envie de boire, un barleywine liquoreux, collant, sucrť avec une morsure de bourbon juste assez pointue.
