suchen (81), , Pennsylvania, USA Feb 16, 2009 Updated: Apr 7, 2009The pour was a nice slightly murky copper-brown. I have to first say that I am not a fan of over-hopping. When the lively hop aroma assailed my nostrils, I thought oh great here we go again. Having said that, when I had my first taste it blew me away! One of the thickest and most mouth-filling beers I’ve yet rated. And warming is right! The barely noticeable a.b.v. nevertheless reaches right down to your toes and out to your fingertips. Hops are wonderfully balanced with the thick malty sweetness of the brew, but (unfortunately for me) the beer finishes on a strongly hoppy and modestly bitter note leaving the taste of mellower flowery hops. soyorganic (217), Denver, Colorado, USA Feb 13, 2009 Bottle, pours a brown, ruby color. Sweet candy sugar aroma. Taste has a strong sweet malt taste with plum and toffee notes that give way to hops. It is thick with a great balance. Alcohol slighlty noticeable. Very nice. tturner (103), , Washington, USA Feb 10, 2009 nice lemon-grass in the nose and flavor. bright, lively, piney, solid barely wine.
malty sweetness followed by citrus hop finish. Narnad (681), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Feb 8, 2009 Pours from the bottle a copper-amber color with a nice off-white head. Aroma is of earthy hops and has a very nice bitterness to it. Flavor has a good alcohol presence, heavy citrus hops note as well as a nice floral and earth hops taste along with a light caramel malt flavor at the end. Mouth feel is pretty heavy and has a great carbonation. The beer as a whole is great and look forward to having this one again. RSRIZZO (1332), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Feb 8, 2009 Color is a deep maroon with mellow carbonation and a thin tight head. Aroma is rich and hoppy. Taste is like the aroma, rich, hoppy and bitter. Starting with a bold medium body it goes down with a crisp bite. Finish is rich with a sweet dried fruit flavor followed by a bright hop taste and then an even bitterness. In the after taste the bitterness builds then leaves you with a faint citrus taste. Overall its another good brew from Victor, but like too many other Barley Wines lately its a bit hoppier then I think it should be. VitaminR (421), Colorado, USA Feb 7, 2009 Malty sweet raisin nose with hints of citrus dipped in caramel sauce. Deep dark amber color, soapy head with nice lacing. Intense nutty sweetness, great bitterness without being overwhelming, nicely balanced. Effervescent, medium to full body, incredible smooth warming alcohol finish with spicy notes. An excellent Barley Wine, very soft and supple. ksurkin (354), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Feb 4, 2009 12oz bottle from total wine in norfolk poured into a snifter. pours a clear ruby/copper color with a very thin white head. aroma is very hop forward and slightly spicy with a hint of alcohol, pine, and citrus notes of grapefruit and orange with a caramel malty sweetness. flavor is very rich with malty sweetness and roasted nuts up front followed by a big citrusy/hoppy hit with flavors of orange, lemon, and pine. has a very good alcohol astringency and apple cider notes as well. palate is very smooth for such a big beer with a very warm alcohol finish that definitely improves as it opens up. would love to try it in six months. fakepurseninja (770), Washington, USA Feb 4, 2009 Screw verticals. Big caramel sweetness with with strong dark fruit and citrus character. Hops really shine in a fantastic barleywine - the full bodied sweetness it countered with huge piney, floral hop presence that bathes the palate in hop resins and oils. This will have you laying horizontal in a hurry if you are not careful.
