MrBeerFanatic (344), jamestown, New York, USA Oct 10, 2009 Pours a deep murky dark amber with a frothy light tan head. Big malty aromas of raisin, caramel, some dark fruits, light pine hops, and a little candy. The flavors start with some raisin, dark fruits, and caramel, then some hops take over and an alcoholic bit! Sweet, bitter, and slightly rich. A warming beer from head to toe. This one will keep you warm in the winter :) Changed (161), Ithaca, New York, USA Oct 10, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours deep amber, nice off white head that lingers. Lacing is moderate. Aroma is fruity and sweet. Tastes of nice ripe fruit and hops. Alcohol taste is present as the brew warms, but doesn’t take away from the enjoyment. A great representation of the genre. BelgianBeerGal (1273), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Oct 8, 2009 12oz bottle in Seattle. Definitely in the American style with the hops appearing in the aroma and flavour, but not overpowering. Sweet caramel and a touch of bourbon also there. Really didn’t notice the 10+ ABV. lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 1, 2009 Bottle thanks to nqualls. Dated Nov 29 12. Dark brown-orange, some floaties, with a thin beige head. Aroma is prunes, brown sugar, dark fruits, light alcohol heat, raisins. Taste is more brown sugar, raisins, rum, alcohol warmth geofbaum (12), Delaware, USA Sep 29, 2009 A ruby/maple red pour. Tastes of roasted malt, on the darker side with a more caramel/chocolate end that’s not strong but isn’t overpowered by the alcohol that was present more towards the end of the drink. A favorite of mine in the barley wine category. yobdoog (1417), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Sep 18, 2009 I tend to like the Old Ho with about 2 years on it. Mellows enough for me and is great. Aroma has some hops, pine, caramel and nice sweetness. Flavor if pretty big. Pine and citrus hops, caramel and molasses and nice body. Jblauvs (528), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Sep 12, 2009 Light brown with Light red woody highlights. Aroma is Caramel, citrus, grapefruit hop aroma, bit of candy sweetness. a bit of fruitiness and some boozy wood. Flavor is hot all the way through, woody sweet caramel flavors, sugary sweet but nice hop ballance and some great fruit. A delightful sipper. TheGB (40), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Sep 11, 2009 Pours a delicious light brown. Aroma is good, but I can’t quite place what the smell is other than hops. Taste is mostly of lightly toasted malt and hops, but not real strong. Alcohol is there, but not overpowering even though it is 11%. Very good, one of my favorite barleywines.
