4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Deeper hazy dark copper with a slightly off-white head. Nicely bitter citrus hops, some herbal notes as well, then a very rich dark fruit and malty aromas come in as well. More restrained in the hop department than other US barleywines, but still nicely bitter (rated a fresh sample) with drier toffee, some dark malt sweetness, and some fruitiness and citrus. Warming medium to thicker body with solid carbonation.

1/16/2010 - A little alcohol goes a long way on a shivering, cold winter night. It reasons that a lot of alcohol goes an even longer way, and better used for even more frigid evenings. This bottle of Victory Old Horizontal was deployed for one of those well-digging cold nights, and it suited the climate very well. Caramel colored with gradients of red and brown, muddy, and nothing on top but a light gray fuzz, the Old Horizontal pours a ponderous beer. The aroma is thick and clotted with chocolate, chalk, a pleasant edge of alcohol, and freshly chopped almonds and hazelnuts - almost as if the brewers added a tablespoon of Nutella to each bottle. The taste features the same menagerie of chocolate and nutty flavors, but the alcohol really shines here, poking through the dark chocolate haziness. The aftertaste is short, begging the drinker to take another sip to garner that addicting chocolate and Nutella flavor, but the alcohol tempers the pace. The hazelnut makes this brew special. but I also appreciate how a high alcohol content, for once, enhances the beer, rather than spoiling its other virtues.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz. bottles shared by Dan- thanks again, Dan! 2005, 2006, and 2008 lined up side-by-side. Pours a cloudy amber color with no head, although the 2008 has some bubbles. Notes of brown sugar, caramel, dark fruits, nuts, toast, and sweet bread. Medium bodied, with a malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Solid barley wine that was fairly consistent across the board, although I did prefer the 2006 and 2008 to the 2005. Still, it didn’t quite live up to its reputation and therefore my expectations.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
33cl bottle @ Monks Cafe Wallingatan, Stockholm. Unclear red color with floaties in it. Medium sized beige head that leaves a fair lacing. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, raisin, plums and lightly alcohol. Taste malts, raisin, plums, alcohol and a bit sweet-bitter towards the end. Strangely enough I get some hints of chocolate as well. Medium to full body, medium carbonation.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from years ago. pour is deep copper/ brown with lots of floaties and a very thin layer of bubbles. Not much head at all. Aroma is toffee malt, butterscotch, faint brandy notes, light spice, hints of fruit, and light Christmas cookie. Very little oxidation. Flavor is also loaded with spicy toffee malt. Also hints of alcohol, faint spice, and light oxidation. Carbonation is light but more than enough to sustain this one. Creamy palate. Light notes of fruit and brown sugar in the finish. I think this is from around 2007 or 2008. Still drinking beautifully.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a murky reddish brown with a non-existant tan head. Aroma is an onslaught of caramel malt, toffee, butterscotch, with a hint of vanilla and pleasantly surpressed alcohol. Taste opens sweet with the alcohol somewhat present before turning into a pungent, sticky bitterness. Finish is long, body thick and creamy.
