xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Aug 21, 2009 Aroma is cardboard oxidation, sweet sugar, and faded hops.
Taste is earthy, piny hops, a bit of cardboard, caramel malt, and bitterness.
Yum. 2 year old Old Horizontal. Very solid.
Finish is subdued, but slightly bitter. Bonne bière complexe et intéressante a boire. drowland (1337), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 4, 2009 12oz bottle into a snifter. Aroma is metal, dust, and sweet. Flavor is huge sweet with a touch of alcohol and significant hoppage. Not bad, but I didn’t think it was as good as some American barley wines. IlanMan (816), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Aug 4, 2009 Bottle. Pour was golden/copper with a light head. Aroma was sweet malt, with spice and a light fruit bouquet. Body was full with a little more spice and fruit complexities. The brew was good but could have used a little more depth overall. Still a fine brew. jrmac (210), USA Aug 4, 2009 Beautiful brown color with a lasting white foam. Nose is caramel, malt, and toasted wood. On the palate I get burnt caramel and woody flavors. Cruzan59 (197), Lititz, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 2, 2009 Draft sampler at Bully’s Restaurant & Pub, Columbia, PA...deep reddish-amber color, no head by the time I got it (tan?)...aroma of dark fruits, brown sugar, slight hops...flavor includes much of the same, some alcohol...smooth, warming...good slow sipper. beerandIT (177), Richmond, Virginia, USA Aug 2, 2009 Pours a darker brown with almost no head. On the nose I am geting caramel, an alcohol sweetness, slight malts there and subtle nuance of toffee there. I also smell some candied sugars there as well. Full bodied. On the palate I am getting sweet alcohol there first, caramel hardcore, butterscotch as well. Delicious! Get this beer. Bigsilky (322), Charleston, USA Jul 19, 2009 Deep burnished amber pour with a thick frothy head. Warm toast and toffee on the nose with a bracing grip of citrus zest hop. This bottle is fresh and the booze does numb the nose slightly. Deceptive palate. As the Brits take the couch with their malt and baked fruit the Americans change the channel and the hop comes forward. Very seamless beer. Velvety texture adds to the vivavcious luxury. The palate dries as baked stone fruit is wisked away by a wall of bittering hops. Well built and made for the cellar. Don’t doubt the best by date. Wonderful with Rogue Smokey Blue. Points given for agebility. Well priced. 93
