Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Mar 7, 2007 Opaque light brown body with lots of particles and a small tan head. If I was to describe its taste in a crude way I’d “pancake with lots of brown sugar”. Not even caramel or toffee flavours, no, pure brown sugar. Alcohol was really apparent to say the least. Subtle leafy hops create a light tartness. Not very complex. Overall good but not excellent. Bought the bottle summer 2006 and while I’m not found of aging beers this one felt raw and way too young. I bought an Old Horizontal bottle I got a Young Horizontal. This is false advertising. Do I smell lawsuit? SDalkoholic (1186), Chula Vista, California, USA Mar 5, 2007 Mahogany colored ale with thick foam for a head. Aroma is undeniable sweet malt. Body is heavy and maintains a sweet sugary caramel flavor. Very nice. jeremytoni (1067), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Mar 4, 2007 Updated: May 19, 2007Great pour, good head that leaves nice lacing, great amber color. Good hoppy flavor, nice strong finish. DirtyMartini (194), Los Angeles, Alabama, USA Mar 4, 2007 newer batch. smell and taste were of basically the same things....piney hops with a sweet malt. either alcohol was well hidden or im just getting used to the flavor of these big beers. nonetheless this ended up tasting a bit like a DIPA to me because the hops were so forward. ill be curious to see how this ages when the hops mellow a bit as i like my barleywines a bit more on the sweet side as opposed to hoppy. kmweaver (2389), Sebastopol, California, USA Mar 3, 2007 12oz bottle, bottled November 2003. Pours a hazy, orangish-brown appearance; light tan head with great lacing. Chewy caramel, orange, and
wet malts in the aroma. Full mouthfeel, showing wet malts, caramel, tropical fruits, and citrus hops; well-carbonated (even after 3+ years), with light caramel from the oxidation; far more drinkable with some age behind it. Viscous and satisfying. Long, sugary and citrus hop finish. BustedFlat (552), Edina, Minnesota, USA Mar 2, 2007 Updated: Apr 30, 2007Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a snifter, deep ruby red with no head at all. The aroma was sweet and fruity. The first few swallows were sticky sweet with notes of dark fruits and pine hops with some alcohol bite. The finish was a slight bitterness that lingered. As it warmed, it mellowed with a more malty flavor. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA Mar 1, 2007 Hops really dominate the aroma, but there is also a hint of dark fruits as well.Pours a deep copper with an off white head.Caramel malts, hops and alcohol make up the flavors.Medium to full mouthfeel with the alcohol coming thru in the finish. demitriustown (689), Shelby Township, Michigan, USA Feb 26, 2007 2006 bottle. A quite hoppy aroma, sweet, a lighter malt scent, and light citrus fruits. Pours a darm maroon color with a small short lived tan head that comes down to a soapy rim around the glass. Nice hop texturesin the taste, alcohol is well hidden but you get some bite on the backend, malt is more distinctive in the taste. Some what a mixture of plums, pine needles, grapefruit, and a slight coffee like taste. Pretty decnt stuff. I like the hoppy stuff so this Barley wine is distinctive and right up my all, but not like the other in the style.
