Luxuriously rich in character, this warming winter ale delivers over 10% alcohol in an oh-so-seductive manner. Deliciously fruity flavors lie under a bracing hop nose.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2014 On tap at George Keeley, NYC. Dark brown ruby. Aroma is hops! Taste is the same with lovely caramel malts. One of the better American Barleywines going around. Hops very present but donít over dominate. Finish is a lovely sweetness and mild bitterness. Overall, bit more malt caramel than Old Numbskull (not as much balance), but in the same sphere of BWs.

í13 vintage bottle. The color is a rich deep copper/amber with a thin white head. One of the best Appearance beers I have seen. The aroma is carmel and toffee mix, with prominent hops. The taste hits you up front and almost burns a little, or a lot. Then the booze hits you on the back end. Hit the style spot on, and this would seem to age perfectly.

Rich, deep caramel color. Dense foamy beige head. Well, the atoma is mostly malty and rich. I mean its all malty and rich. The taste is smooth, strong, boring, uneventful, and mellow. This is a great beer for one thing... forgetting...

Clear orangeish-reddish-amber with a frothy eggshell head. Aroma of toast, toffee, raisin, resin, and citrus peel. Itís a tad mild though. Fruity sweet taste with some decent bitterness and a touch of booze. Medium-full bodied with soft carbonation and a somewhat syrupy feel.

Iíve been looking forward to this for a while. 22 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a clear dark amber color. The head is a two finger off-white shade. Its texture is excellent, and it has good retention as well. Lacing left behind is rather plentiful. S: Itís actually not quite as sweet as I thought it would be. The hop notes here - as expected - are piny and resinous, balanced by its malt sweetness. In particular, it brings caramel, vanilla, and toffee. Itís definitely a quality aroma, if a bit more ístandardí than I was expecting. T: The taste works better, I think. Piny hops hit the palate first - there isnít much harshness, and the pine flavor is incredibly vivid. It becomes sweeter after the midtaste and especially on the finish, while its hop flavor becomes almost ísaltyí to my twisted palate. The harsher elements of the alcohol are hidden very well. If I have to complain about something, itís that the sweetness here isnít well defined - sure it brings plenty of caramel, toffee, and earth, but not much in the way of dark fruits or candy. Thereís just the subtlest suggestion of the latter, unfortunately it isnít quite enough. Every once in a while, thereís a gentle wisp of chocolate that hits the palate. M: This seems to be even softer than others in the style. Of course, being a barleywine, itís still sweet and heavy. The finish is, naturally, superbly long and mildly bitter. Itís more salty than anything. Nonetheless, Iím really impressed how well the booze is hidden. O: Give this a year or two in the cellar and this would kick ass. Right now, though, itís still drinking pretty damn well. If the sweetness was more defined, then it would be killer immediately. As it stands, Iím really enjoying the hop profile but wished the malt component worked a little better.

22oz bottle pours a reddy brown color a bit of head. Sweet malty goodness. Mild hopiness. Smooth.

Growler. Pours a clear orange/amber with a thin head and excellent lacing. Aroma is a candied sweetness, caramel, a hint of hops and booze. Taste is predominantly a candied sweetness and strong malt with some hops in the background but they are overpowered. Medium to full bodied with a somewhat dry finish. A decent barleywine but too sweet for my taste. Ironically this used to be one of my favorite beers which just goes to show how tastes can change over the years.

This poured a brick orange color with a slight haze and soft light that exudes form the body of the beer. A fat off white head of orange tinged foam to top the beer and it fell lazy like it had all day and left great lace and alcohol legs. Nose is fantastic. Itís candied orange peel, malty caramel with a bit of nut and butterscotch, fresh orange to go with that and a little bit of hop presence.

Taste is all that and more. The caramel is smooth and buttery with a hint of nuttiness. The fruits are lively and fresh with a bit of fresh orange to really juice things up. The malt sweetness has something buttery on ti and that is like candy. The mouthfeel is full and sticky and has a bit of pine resin to coat the throat and let the solvent like alcohol just graze your palate before the finish. A bit of warmth and you have just had one exciting ride.

Super. Just super.

Bomber. Dark coppery crimson colored with a hearty layer of beige foam. Lots of herbal hops, dark sugars, pine resin and ripe citrus in the aroma. The taste is dominated by caramel, hops resin and candied citrus peel upfront along with some dark fruits, persimmon and pine. Naturally thick and creamy body with more sugary malts and alcohol in the finish. Great example of an American Barley Wine done right.

22 oz bomber pours a dark amber color with a nice off white head. Aromas of dark fruits, pine, resin, caramel malt. Full bodied, sticky and sweet, a great example of an american barley wine
