So I went deep into my cellar and opened a 1 year old bottle of Old Horizontal, let it warm slightly, and sipped for an hour of pure unadulterated pleasure...
Syrupy texture, somewhat cloying and vinous...intensely sweet with dried fruits, caramel, toffee, weird spices, and roasted malt. Enormous grapefruit and pine resin hoppiness lingering in the finish...along with an ever so welcome alcohol signature, most notable in the peppery throat warming...bringing with it a welcome sense of contentment, inner peace, and unfeigned forgiveness...oh, and by the way...Frankenkitty, thou Spawn of Cthulhu, you shall never catch me...

| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Nov 27, 2009 An incredible example of a barleywine. Spot on for style with all the expected aromas and flavors, including bubblegum, raisin, caramel, and more. Packs a punch with little discernible alcohol burn, and nicely warming on a chilly night. I can only find fault in the palate which seems to me a little thinner than other barley wines I’ve had. And it’s expensive--17 bucks at my store. But well worth it. andyhite (293), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 25, 2009 mahogany in hue, similar to that of a doppelbock, but a thicker head. roasted molases, subtle salinity, subtle yeast, and maple syrup nail the aromas. lighter than expected on the nose. wow what a body! contrary to the nose, the flavor still hits the b’wine style, just in a lighter manner. more dominant madeira notes hit the palate, almost mirroring a simple tawny port with excess carbonation. toffee, heat, and maple sap shine through the fullest. I still stand by the aroma leading to a lighter style (less robust than most b’wines). Nonetheless, quite a tasty pour. *Note* - As the brew warms, the mellowness is achieved, and the anise begins to dominate. cellar temp may be a bit too chilly here. potbeercollege (335), Boulder, Colorado, USA

Going well so far. Upon tasting: Long lasting flavors. So complex yet elegantly balanced. "It’s perfect" says Jabo. It would be hard to disagree with him. It’s truly a stunning beer. Just try it. If you’re reading this, you’ve got to try this beer. Quite an experience trying it for the first time. All tasters in our room impressed. Barrios (858), Nashville, Tennessee, USA

Dark golden brown liquid with ruby highlights. Small creamy tan colored head of foam. Okay retention and okay lacing.
Big malty nose. Smells like buttered caramel. A little bit of brown sugar and vanilla. Slight hint of candied apricots. Very slight hint of earthy hops.
Nice caramel malts are out front. Hints of buttered bread with peach preserves. Toffee. Slight kiss of hops. Not prominent, though. Slight earthy spiciness.
Fairly light bodied for a barleywine style, I think. But, maybee that’s just me. It is smooth and creamy, though, and that’s a plus.
This one is very drinkable, IMO. Grab a case and come on by. Let’s see how many we can drink.
