RAYBOY01 (1757), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 8, 2006 Frankly, I have tired of being a ratings whore...I’m tired of drinking middle of the road drek only because I need the rating to stay ahead of the notoriously devious Frankenkitty in our quest for 1000! So I went deep into my cellar and opened a 1 year old bottle of Old Horizontal, let it warm slightly, and sipped for an hour of pure unadulterated pleasure...
Syrupy texture, somewhat cloying and vinous...intensely sweet with dried fruits, caramel, toffee, weird spices, and roasted malt. Enormous grapefruit and pine resin hoppiness lingering in the finish...along with an ever so welcome alcohol signature, most notable in the peppery throat warming...bringing with it a welcome sense of contentment, inner peace, and unfeigned forgiveness...oh, and by the way...Frankenkitty, thou Spawn of Cthulhu, you shall never catch me...
TheCaptain (430), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 27, 2009 Bottle- summer sample of this winter warmer. Copper dark brown with a small simmered head. Dark fruits-plum, mashy grains with a muddled ABV that blended well. Some spice sweet textures, good sipper. Flavorful and enjoyable. BroSpud (424), , Massachusetts, USA Jun 4, 2009 12oz bottle stamped best before 2013. Aged for well over 1 month (I’m impatient...couldn’t wait any longer). This is a very well done beer and will most likely get better with age. The alcohol taste may have been a bit on the strong side but that is understandable given the 11% it is packing. gpekar (194), Maryland, USA Jun 4, 2009 Poured a slightly hazy dark copper with a nice creamy tan head. There was some sediment suspended in the beer after the pour. There was a nice sweet aroma of caramel and dried fruit. The beer had a creamy silky texture. On the initial taste the alcohol was detected right away, but there was a good amount of sweetness that cut the alcohol. A good hop bite developed towards the finish and a good warmth. The alcohol taste initially blends into a nice smooth sweetness and the finish is a combination of sweet and bitter with the warmth flowing over it all. Excellent beer!!!!!!!! nickd717 (788), Palo Alto, California, USA Jun 4, 2009 Rating #700! I’m obsessed with this stuff but still haven’t gone as far as BJCPing it or quitting my day job or whatnot. What can I say, I’m a maverick I guess. Anyway, back to O.H. Bottle from Wegman’s in Princeton, NJ. Drank it at 10am while my little sister was graduating college (pure class, I know). The stuff is damn good. Made Katie Couric’s speech much better, that’s for sure. Copper color with a big beige head. Sweet caramel malt on the aroma with dark fruits. Aroma is loads of caramel malt, raisin, plum, fig, spices, brown sugar, and of course alcohol. Smooth, full, and syrupy palate that really hit the spot on a crisp New Jersey spring morning. A winner - or "victory" if you will. Zing! BigHoppy (1), michigan city, Indiana, USA does not count Jun 1, 2009 Like many of the barleywines, the sweet malty aroma is abundant. However, the victory signature is apparent in the quality of the finish. Very smooth and a wonderful taste in a cool setting. Chef Chad (78), Grand Junction, Colorado, USA Jun 1, 2009 Truly loved this offering from Victory. Best before 5-2013 on the bottle
I am aging 2 bottles.. I might have to buy more because this was a very nice beer. Smells of raisins and plums with a hearty malt and sugary love going on here. Pours a copper that has a nice shine to it with a good amount of white head. Medium to full syrup body with a very nice balanced carbonation and very smooth finish. Flavor was almost top notch. Sweet Old school cameral shop flavors going on. Brown sugar with a very nice balanced hop profile. The 11% is hidden on this one and it will creep up on you in a hurry.. Very Nice Brew altehkiller (71), , California, USA May 27, 2009 great barleywine. i really love the sweet maltyness. its like tasting the super maltyness of an unfinished beer with the alcohol of a super strong beer!
