The nose is deep malt, earthy, hits of alcohol, hops and caramel, a great sniffing beer. Start is sweet, the top is medium to full, the finish hop laden ,dry, lightly acidic and the alcohol warms the tummy, a ’World Class’ barley Wine. After my first experience, with the repulsive Bigfoot, i have had nothing but good luck. Another great beer from Victory, fruity tastes and aromas of grapes and plums. Great mouthfeel, very thick. I should have got another. Jake Barnes (456), St. Louis, Missouri, USA

I need to get a case of this stuff! The aroma is amazing. Very fruity with hints of melon, peach, and berries. Just a touch of hops in the nose. Flavor: DEAR GOD this is smooth. Melon, peaches, strawberries, finished off by a dose of hops. Just amazing! Perhaps the most drinkable barlywine i've ever had. I need to have a taste off with Bells' 3rd Coast and 3F's Behemoth to determine the grand champ of the barleywines'. JMerritt (1327), Macomb, Illinois, USA

Head is mostly diminishing except for a thin ring round the edge of the glass and a light film in the middle. Big caramel malts in the aroma, along with Red Delicious apples, honeycomb, dates, and a touch of alcohol. Thick, chewy flavor, with more Red Delicious apples and sweet caramel malts. Juicy raisins in the finish. Full bodied and delicious. Alcohol is very well hidden in the flavor, and is only detectible in the immediate aftertaste. Beer Lover (23), Washington DC, USA

They brew some incredible beers, and Old Horizontal is one of them. This is a beautifully done barleywine, that is rich, delicious, and complex. The nose is very sweet malty with peppery hints of alcohol. The palate is lush with sweet malt flavors, caramel, toffee, and vanilla. This beer finishes malty up front then ends with a soothing, warming burn. One of the best domestic barleywines on the market today. fuchebu (146), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA

It really surprised me at the balance of malt and hops in this ale. The alcohol is apparent, but not at all obtrusive. Sweet at first, but the hops pull through like a champ. Caramel notes that give way to raisins and plums. Really nice mouthfeel, which is important to me when it comes to barleywine. A must try..
