3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 mL bottle from Wine & Beer Westpark, Richmond. Pours a clear dark copper color with a large frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of smoke, earth, brown sugar, plum, berries, a bitter apple-seed like note. The taste is smoke which gives way to brown sugar, chocolate, plums. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Not bad, but the smoke is a little jarring and could meld a little better with the beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap at Victory. Poured a clear amber with a decent ran head. Nose is fresh lemon and muted smoked barbecue. Lots of brown sugar glazed barbecue. Taste is heavy carbonation up front, apparent alcohol, muted smoke...but a great base beer. Sweeter, balanced, clean. Not really that smoky and not a lot of Abbey Dubbel character either. A weird one, but I liked it a lot. Would like to re-try in bottle format.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 10/20/2011. The brew is a dark brown-amber with a medium light tan head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Smokey, peaty malt aroma. Medium body with flavors of smoked malt, earth, caramel and a touch of hops. The finish is a little thin and malty with a smokey dark fruit aftertaste. Decent overall.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Courtesy of Craig, pours clear amber with tan head. The aroma has a mix of modest smokiness mixing with lesser amounts of crystal like malts, bacon and a faint yeasty spiciness. The taste is good smooth mild bacon slipping into smokiness, some malts and a bit of roasty malts followed by a touch of Belgian like spicy yeastiness.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A long-lasting, dense beige head covers the clearish copper hue. Attractive beechwood smoke nose, pretty fullsome and fitting the gently candied, fruity, caramelly, chocolatey even. Frankly, all those flavours fit the smoke to a T. It is perhaps a bit sweet, but then again, a dubbel base with 8% alcohol should not be expected to be as drinkable as a marzen. Warming up, its fruitiness evolves towards orange, adding a gentle complexity, both in the fruit and spice registry. Well, it seems that Iím finding this better than most, but I guess itís no surprise for a smokehead. Pleasant carbonation, actively cleansing the tongue and helped in doing so by a soft leafy bitterness. Good stuff and original.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Head is initially large, frothy/fizzy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is hazy medium amber-brown, bottle conditioned.
Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted grain/nuts), lightly hoppy (flowers), with a strong note of burnt plastic, other notes of candy sugar, gum, smoke.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, unclean.
Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
Have you ever put together a plastic model kit, like a car or plane? Remember that polystyrene smell? Snap off a twig of the "tree" that the parts come on and light one end on fire, then blow it out. Thatís pretty much what this smells like. Well, itís a strong component anyway...there are other odors that are thankfully not as unpleasant as that, but this just doesnít smell very healthy/clean. Makes me cringe a little bit every time I sniff it. The aftertaste is unpleasant as well, perhaps from those unwanted fermentation byproducts. Syrupy and sweet. Not as smoky as hoped. Seemed like a fun idea, but the execution just didnít work out. Without the strong plastic smell, this could probably score in the low-mid 3ís.
