COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1987, when we arrived in Bamberg, Germany for the first time, St. Otto was not there to greet two thirsty travelers in a rented Fiat. He’d been dead for 848 years but we were alive, and our recent visit to the Belgian brewery of Orval only fanned the flames of our desire for fermented pleasures. the smoked malt(’rauch’)beers of this lovely town where St. Otto was once bishop were our siren song, luring us into deep, exotic flavors that we never before imagined in beer. Three decades later we wondered what smoked malt might add to a Belgian-style dubbel ale. Here it is, an Otto revival of sorts. We hope it helps rejuvenate some of our brain cells that were martyred in Bamberg so long ago.

750ml bottle from Specs, drank @ home, 6:28pm, 12/9/2011 .. . Pours a deep amber brown, strong foam head, light sticky lacing .. . smoke, sausage skin, sweet tobacco, christmas berries, dark fruit, and light yeast .. . a few sprinkles of genius with a chance of doom, also light touches of alcohol and spice .. . This is pretty nice stuff, the dubbel base is an interesting take on a smoked beer and this brew is definitely a change of pace .. . . Who am I clowning? I have no business being a clown! I’m leaving the clowning business to all the other clowns in the clowning business.

Pours a dark amber with a very thick lasting tan head. Aroma has a light smoke smell and a stronger hop and minerality aroma. A much stronger smoked flavor than expected from aroma. Finishes with a slightly bitter hoppiness with a noted alcohol flavor. Overall an enjoyable experience.

Bottle courtesy of blankboy. Deep amber-brown pour. The aroma is rich and smoky. Nice beechwood character with a touch of spice and smoke. A little bit of fruitiness behind the smoke along with some light clove. A bit of peat and a lot of fruit with a nice peppery character. Tasty and pretty lovely.

750 ml corked bottle. Pours a deep yet clear reddish amber color with a medium sized cream colored head. Aroma of lightly smoked malts, dark fruit notes and beef jerky. Taste is much the same same as the aroma. Nice and not overdone.

Caged and corked ... pours the color of stained oak, and gives off the aroma of burnt oak! Solid Bamberger style here, rich with smokey malt, yet fairly easy to drink. This might be a good intermediate step to the style, and certainly pairs awesomely with a rich cheese soup, onion soup, roast beef, or a cigar. (#4439, 1/8/2012)

The tawny colored body was clear, and the head was very small. The aroma was malty, smoky, and full. I could detect smells similar to most doppelbocks, like brown sugar, raisins, and cherry. The taste was much smokier than I was expecting, and since I like smoked beers, that was a good thing. Besides the heavy smoke, I could taste the caramel malt, and some hops. The mouthfeel was a little too thin for my liking, and there was serious sting from the carbonation. Finish was fleeting and smoky. I liked this for the smoked malts, but otherwise it is a typical doppelbock.

Clear dark brown pour with an average tan head. Sweet nutty malt aroma, smoke. Well balanced smoked beer. Not too much smoke, nor do you have to look to find it - just right. Sweet nutty smoky and smooth. Very nice, I’ll buy this one again.

Pours a lovely clear mahogany with a very thick, if not persistent, light tan head. Malty aroma has smoky, peaty and caramel notes. Flavor fills the mouth with malt, fruit, and barbecue smoke with caramel and floral hints. There is also a whisper of sweetness and a touch of hoppy bitterness. Smooth texture has plenty of body and a good amount of fizz.
