3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A long-lasting, dense beige head covers the clearish copper hue. Attractive beechwood smoke nose, pretty fullsome and fitting the gently candied, fruity, caramelly, chocolatey even. Frankly, all those flavours fit the smoke to a T. It is perhaps a bit sweet, but then again, a dubbel base with 8% alcohol should not be expected to be as drinkable as a marzen. Warming up, its fruitiness evolves towards orange, adding a gentle complexity, both in the fruit and spice registry. Well, it seems that I’m finding this better than most, but I guess it’s no surprise for a smokehead. Pleasant carbonation, actively cleansing the tongue and helped in doing so by a soft leafy bitterness. Good stuff and original.

The large corked bottled looked very appealing, but I should admit I do not like many smoke beers, especially those with a strong smokiness that overpowers the other aromas and flavors. Unfortunately, this is striking example of an overly smokey brew.
There is so much smoke flavor and aroma in this that the experience was somewhat more like eating a heavily smoked meat than drinking a beer, and an aftertaste that made me feel like I had tried a cigar while drinking. Of course, the texture was entirely different: In fact, the mouthfeel was exceptional. Otto Ale is smooth, with excellent carbonation and a medium-full body.
O: Drink again? ... no thanks. But I’d be happy to use this for cooking meats and sauces.

the smoke is done well. up front, but not overbearing in the aroma or flavor. but it seems the dubbel that is the foundation of this beer is a bot lacking and thin for the abv. really like the smoke aspect, but the base beer just ok."

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Here’s a nice old bottle (bottled on SEPT 27 2011), so let’s consider this a review for historical purposes. Corked and caged. Nose is fruity with light meaty smoke, but that’s clearly tailed off by half; still has a nice barleywine air about it, and the smoke is still present. Dark ruby pour is much darker without holding it up to the light, head is rich and creamy tan. Taste semi-sweet, smooth, thin malt with medium smoke and light-medium fruit, stronger caramel. Smoke is probably best rendered in the finish and aftertaste. Low bitterness, not at all tangy or infected, soft medium-full body still has plenty of carbonation otherwise and hides its alcohol really well (I’d have guessed this was a normal 5.0-5.5%abv Rauchbier). Some lovely prune elements on the very bottom, and nice Dubbelish swirl with a hint of brown sugar and yeast. Still not sure a Dubbel works with smoked malt, or at least not like this.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750ml bomber from Picadilly. Pours a murky brown color with a large sudsy beige head that has good retention. The Aroma is soft with smoked malts and some misplaced fruits. The taste features that classic Bamberg smoked malt flavor intermixed with pears, apricots and bitter nuts. The palate is full and smooth with soft carbonation. Finishes long and dry. Overall: Decent smoked beer.

[5226-20130412] 750mL bottle. Plastic and smoky old permanent markers aroma. Hazy, dark amber orange body with a quick foamy white head. More permanent marker and smoky sweet vegetal base flavour. Full body. Really interesting, super smoky and has that unique permanent marker throwback to my childhood. (6/3/7/3/14) 3.3

Reddish brown pour with a cream-colored head. Aroma of smoke, dark fruit, and caramel. Mostly sweet malt flavor with dark fruit and caramel, some bread and hint of smoke flavor. Gets sweeter as beer warms. Nice beer.
