3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml bottle. No apparent bottle date. Appearance: Dark brown and opaque with a light khaki head that dissipates.
Aroma: Complex blend that starts with strong red wine and charred oak, with an underlying chocolate, roast, and vanilla. Wonderful aroma.
Taste: Rich malt sweetness upfront that quickly hits a tannic red wine and light oak flavor that dominates the taste profile. Roast and chocolate show up on the back end at the swallow.
Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy body with some viscosity and low carbonation.
Finish: Roast and chocolate malt character linger from the swallow thru the finish. A touch of oak and toffee as well.
Overall: An interesting beer here. Starts with an amazing complex aroma that blends the characters of the red wine barrel, chocolate, and roasted malt beautifully. The taste doesnít quite back it up though. The wine barrel charter really dominates, and itís not until the swallow and finish that the true Porter malt characteristics come thru. Perhaps a little less barrel exposure would provide better balance.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance: clear amber-brown with one fat finger of rocky beige head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Aroma: vinous grape, coffee, cocoa nibs, vanilla, dark fruit, woody. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter, light tart. (7/10) Medium-full body, moderate carbonation, mildly warming and lightly tart, tannic and drying vinous finish. (4/5)
I donít think Iíve ever had anything quite like this before. Itís sweetish, like one would expect for a Baltic Porter, but the wine barrel ageing gives it a vinous tart character that cuts the sweetness and even makes the body seem a bit on the light side. Iíd like to try the base (Baltic Thunder) for comparison, but thereís still a fairly strong coffee presence, particularly in the finish, that I think gives me a pretty good idea of where it started before the big barrel presence came to play. Itís not subtle, but itís interesting, and that counts for a lot in my book. (15/20)

5/29/16. Bomber. Pours a deep red mahogany. Mild nose w a mix of wine and roasty malt. As billed an interesting mix of Baltic porter overlaid with wine. It gives it a tart tannic edge.

With Z, pours a thick deep dark red mahogany brown pour with no head. Nose is a nice wooded oak and tannic ! Taste is fruity and oaky with a dry ness that captures the barrel aging . Finish is dry fruit, short and ends on the tannic oaky notes . Nice ! Quaff Score 8 / 10

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured into a snifter.
3.25 A: Pours a deep brown color. One and a half fingers of frothy/creamy tan head. Retention is below average and a few wisps of lacing are left.
3.75 S: Wow does the wine barrel come through. The nose is surely centered around it. Vinous grape, big vanilla and oak, and moderate supple tannins. The base beer almost gets lost in there, but it does bring forth the barrel elements. Roasty malts, cocoa, tangy caramel, molasses. Again Iíll emphasize that this is heavy on the barrel, which isnít such a bad thing.
3.75 T: Like the nose, the barrel stands strong, but the base beer does come through better. The same barrel elements and grape as in the nose. Roasty malts, big caramel, molasses, dark fruitiness underneath. Quite tasty.
4.0 M: Lighter heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Good creaminess and super smooth. Good here.
3.75 D: Seems like everything gets better when Victory puts their beers into barrels. Pick this one up, itís good.

Poured a deep reddish brown with ample tan/reddish head. The aroma is red wine barrels, mild chocolate and cocoa nibs. some mild roasted malts, graham cracker, and dark fruits. The taste is pretty similar with dark chocolate, red wine, dark fruits, and some tart cherries. Dry finish. More tart than I thought it would be. Maybe some infection? Medium mouth, cotton. Pretty good overall.

Draft at Capones in Norristown, PA.
Pours a very dark copper color with mahogany edges and a two finger frothy head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Streaks of lace left behind.
Roasted dark malt aroma with an earthy barrel and dry vinous notes integrated into the base beer. Toasted oak and dark grapes complimented by smokey, roasted malt. Hints of dark chocolate and burnt toast along with some charcoal and smoked meat but the oak and vinous fruit notes overpower the smoke beer characteristics a bit too much for my taste.
Full bodied with a moderate barrel presence thatís nicely integrated into the base adding another dimension to the intense smokiness. Dry, toasted oak with vinous red wine notes countered by smoked/burnt malt, toast, charcoal and dark chocolate. Sweet up front from the barrel presence followed by smoke and roasted malt before finishing dry. Decent job barrel aging this beer but the wine and barrel notes take away from the smokiness that I like so much in the base beer.
