ScottyP (314), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA Jul 22, 2009 Pours completely black with tan head/lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit, chocolate, some pine hops as well. Similar taste, bitter coffee/pine hop finish. Pine finish was a little off-putting. Solid nonetheless. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Jul 22, 2009 Updated: Sep 28, 2009Bottle shared with scottyp at woody’s. Pours a fantastic black with solid mocha head. The hints of piney hops are a little off putting, but I think as they fade out I’ll enjoy this even more. Great roasty coffee aftertaste. Very good though. Smokey nose and flavor on an aged bottle is very nice. tarjei (1741), Bryne, Norway Jul 19, 2009 Bottle at Copenhagen Beer Festival 2009. Black color, lovely tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Flavor is the same, with fine bitterness and a dark fruity finish. Outstanding! highibus (421), Mill Creek, Washington, USA Jul 18, 2009 I look into the abyss that was my glass, now completely void of light. A perfectly frothy tan head looms large and lasts long. Big biscuit aromas waft from my glass and tempt my nose. I take a sip and the deep roastiness dances all over my mouth then a very nice astringent bite hits and everything smooths itself away. Chocolate and coffee notes just pop up from time to time on my tongue. They linger until the next sip, which I cannot wait to take. Not overly heavy. I have never wanted to burp so badly just to taste it again. Very nice!! RichardGretton (3128), Leicestershire, England Jul 15, 2009 Bottle. Pitch black beer with a strong off white head. The aroma is roasted and the flavour is deeply roasted and bitter. Overall a very good strong beer. beernovice39 (237), South Carolina, USA Jul 12, 2009 Updated: Jul 23, 2009Bottle poured jet black, like used motoroil. Great hoppy taste! Loved this one! weaselkenievil (738), Cheshire, England Jul 10, 2009 Bottle courtesy of our Mes I think. Black as night with a light brown head, the colour of one of those 80’s leather jackets that were so popular round my way. Daark chocolate, coffee, alcohol (but in a way I like) and something a little floral hoppy like. Very tasty, thank you very much. FlyingTaco (112), Massachusetts, USA Jul 9, 2009 Originally reviewed 2/18/2008...Rich, 3-finger root beer float-colored head stays well - decent lacing. French roast-colored opaque body. Very enticing.
Nose has a slight metallic twang with a little coldness (from carbonation?) at first - graduates to nice bitterness and coffee grounds.
Chewy, sweet hearty roasted bittersweet chocolate malt with nice grassy hop finish. Vanilla ice cream with natural cocoa topping. Evolves into further bitterness - alcohol also emerges more. Well-balanced - lots of everything here.
Very chewy - slowly coats, soothes, relieves? Slight alcohol burn; hop finish becomes more pronounced.
Quite drinkable for the style; perhaps not a true session item (rather filling) but a worldly effort all-around.
