leaparsons (4659), Leicester, Leicestershire, England Jun 6, 2009 Bottle. Black with a cream head. Aromas are roast malts with peat smokiness and chocolate. Yeasty with hints of berry. Flavours are very rich bitter strong coffee with liquorice and more green pine than expected. Smooth and slightly oily on the palate. Woody and bitter on the finish with peppery, boozy notes. Really good. HOPSHUNTER (376), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 5, 2009 Bottle, courtesy of Smokepot23. Poured opaque black with a large, creamy, dense light brown head, huge sheets of lace on the glass. Aroma is massive roasted malt with a vinous character, hints of coffee and smoke are also detectable. Full bodied, smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Great amount of carbonation. Flavor is burnt malts, tobacco, rasin, and booze. Excellent impy. DiabolikDUB (143), Portland, Oregon, USA Jun 4, 2009 Poured from Bottle into Snifter glass. Enjoy by date January 8th, 2014.
Pours a deep, dense black but can see just a hint of brown towards the head as I tip the glass, with a huge creamy tan head that dissolves into a nice layer around the glass. Aroma is predominately black coffee with some roasted malts. Flavor has an oddly sweet roasted malt, some coffee and a soft bitterness. Its a medium- to heavy-bodied that coats your mouth with every sip. Enjoyable Imperial Stout but think it would be much better with some age on it to maybe drop some of the sweetness down. crackedmachine (82), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 3, 2009 Pours an opaque black with a huge, creamy light-brown head. Aggressive but hard to place aroma - some candy, coffee, malt, maybe a little yeast. Flavor is slightly sweet with plenty of malt, some coffee, and a tangy, bitter finish. The tangy (but not sour) component comes close to overwhelming this stout. vtafro (452), , New Jersey, USA Jun 3, 2009 Updated: Aug 4, 20098/4/09
Bottle. Black pour with nice brown head. Aroma and flavor don’t meet what i remember but still a solid RIS. Doesn’t exactly meet the great quality pf some that I have been lucky to try.
Original Rating:
Great beer by victory. One of the first imperials stout i had tried. Definitely worth buying the six pack although it has gotten a little more expensive. dnstone (134), , New Jersey, USA Jun 2, 2009 One of my all time favorite beers. Great aroma, prefect hopping, complex malt flavor that last...the "everlasting gobstopper of beer"...except that I always seem to find the end a bit soon. Its also great on the hand-pump at the brewery, would love to try a bourbon barrel aged version! jumpjet2k (135), Austin, Texas, USA May 28, 2009 Bottle. Pitch black, of course, with a smooth, fluffy, bread-colored head and nice lacing. Aroma’s packed - licorice, coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, a little smoke. Flavor is much the same - strongly roasty, with hop notes here and there as well. Aftertaste is hoppy and bitter, in a grainy coffee-like way, with almost a salty flavor - no idea where that’s from. It’s kinda like the taste you get after eating hard pretzels, actually. Definitely rich and malty, and perhaps a little too sweet for me. The complexity of this beer is exceptional, especially in the aroma, but it’s not quite balanced well enough to be a top-rank beer, if you ask me. plovmand (1588), Helsinge, Denmark May 26, 2009 Bottle. Pitch black body. Ligth brown head. Light roasty aroma with fruity notes and coffee. Quite hoppy flavour. Nice roasty notes, coffee and chocolate. Great balance. Creamy mouthfeel.
