bierslaaf (33), Cape Town, South Africa May 16, 2009 Pitch balck with a thick brown head. Maybe due to the fact that I knocked it on the table while opening and got a stout fountain resulting in stout all over including a generous amount in the toaster. Roasty malt and flowers in the aroma. Good carbonation (I like carbonation in a stout). Amazing that hops can match the powerful roasted malt. Lasting floral finish. This is an amasing complex stout. Maddog (230), Kettering, Ohio, USA May 13, 2009 12 oz bottle from Belmont Party Supply in Dayton, OH. This is one ferocious looking brew. Opaque black with a cascading dark brown head. This IS has a chocolate aroma and a sticky thick body exploding with roasted malts and finishes dry with alcohol warmth. Has hints of coffee and malty sweetness. A very satisfying beer. hayduke (1616), Eureka, California, USA May 12, 2009 From a 12 oz bottle courtesy of a trade with Erik in Indiana this poured a jet black with a very thick and rich tan head and excellent lacing. Big nose of roasted malts with coffee, chocolate, along with floral hops. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy and quite smooth. Flavor is rich as well with a ripe fruit in the roasted malts and hops. A very tasty imperial stout. beerandIT (177), Richmond, Virginia, USA May 11, 2009 Pours black with a small amount of head. Coffee, chocolate, roasted malts and toffee on the nose. Full bodied and leads me to think it will age well. Chocolate on the palate along with malts, coffee and toffee in there as well. Enjoy this one a lot and is widely available. Lacing the glass very well also. harrisoni (6703), Ashford, Kent, England May 9, 2009 Bottle from Utobeer. Thick black, big tan head. Like a big ginger hop thing on the aroma, with lots and lots of intense dark roasted malts. Lots of choc and espresso coffee. Reminds me of ginger biscuits covered in thick dark black bitter choc. Good smoothness in the mouth. Finish has more ginger. Yes, it is quite drinkable, only slightly on the boozy side on the finish. But is doesn’t have a great deal of complexity or distinctive character. Very good choc and espresso. Good straight up intensity. tokyogoat (505), San Diego, California, USA May 7, 2009 After hearing so many good thigns about this beer I figured I had to give it a try. Picked up a 6pack and chilled just below room temp.
Cracked open my first one, poured it, and was very impressed. I havent seen a King that dark since James Earl Jones in ’Coming To America.’
The thin tan head sat on top of my glass till i started drinking.
It smelled great, dark chocolate, raisins, badussy, and so on.
It was thinner than I expected, no oat taste, thin, hot with alcohol, and rinses off the pallet quickly leaving behind the coffee, chocolate, and alcohol.
Flavors are fantastic. The thin body makes it easy to drink. The high alcohol content makes me drunk. This beer is designed to help people like me make terrible life decisions. petematte46 (212), Dallas, Texas, USA May 6, 2009 Bottle, dark brown/black, medium tan head, nice aroma of chocolate malt, nice taste of chocolate, definite taste of hops that leaves a mild bitterness at the end jmm635 (249), Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA May 5, 2009 Pours black with a thin tan head. Really hoppy aroma which was quite a surprise. Also lots of roasted qualities and bitter chocolate. Up front hops on the tongue, then rounds out with good ol’ roastiness, chocolate, and espresso. Full bodied, lingering finish. Paired very well with my dark chocolate tasting platter for dessert!
