andersand (271), Malmö, Sweden May 5, 2009 Black with a light brown head. Aroma is hoppy with a harsh roasted undertone. Body is medium to full, slick and somewhat oily. Flavour is hoppy and roasted with notes of burnt wood, dark bitter chocolate, salty liqourice and light fruityness (green apples.) Remembered this one as a bit better the first time I tried it. markwise (1132), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA May 4, 2009 12 oz bottle from trade with adamharbaugh. Pours dark brown with dissipating tan head. Nose is roast, some booze, chocolate, ripe dark fruit, earth, licorice, and some hops. Flavor is hops, roasted malt, earth, dark chocolate, and some licorice with yellow lacing. Lingering hops and roast finish off this medium-bodied monster. noompa (130), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 2, 2009 12 oz. bottle (2009) in a snifter. Aroma is sweet w/ more hops than I have found in any other imperial stout; pours jet black, albeit not too viscous (reminiscent of the Blackout Stout) w/ a substantial beige head; flavor is sweet malty w/ some molasses and smoke giving way to coffee bitterness; full-bodied, not too chewy though, ending long and tarry w/ a metallic undertone. Tobacco evident throughout. Good stuff that tastes best at near-room temperature. Nice burn on the way down- this brew has quite grown on me. monkeychugg55 (207), Joliet, Illinois, USA Apr 27, 2009 Pours very dark with a decent size tan head. Aroma is not quite what I had expected, bright pine, lemon grass and floral hops with underlying roasted malt, chocolate, and espresso. Flavor is really hoppy at first, with the pine and such, then fades into toasted malt, coffee, and chocolate bitterness twards the finish. Coffee lingers, and hops return for a little extra bittering at the end. Different spin on an imp. stout, but not bad. mattmc1973 (300), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Apr 26, 2009 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Quite black in color, but with a red/brown tinge when held up to light. Very small tan ring around the glass. Aroma of roast malt and dark fruit. Taste of toasted/roasted malt, espresso, and dark fruits. Mouthfeel is thinner than other impy stouts, but still smooth. Not up there with Expedition Stout to me, but pretty good. arminjewell (100), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Apr 25, 2009 One of the best stouts, poured black with a tan head. Aroma of coffee but also of citrus and pine, tastes start with an excellent hoppy character that finished with coffee and chocolate flavor. An excellent combination of stout and IPA, a must try that leaves no alcohol flavor! tekhna (100), California, USA Apr 22, 2009 Aged one year. A little metallic on the nose, and a little metallic immediately before the roasty malts kick in.
Not nearly as viscous as an Expedition or one of those ilk; it’s perhaps a sad statement about the state of affairs in the beer world when a beer like this becomes tame. I like this stout. Roasty and cocoa that linger without a ton of sweetness. Overall, a very good beer, to my tastes. It’s not an astounding beer, but very good.
A year in the cellar tames the fresh alcohol kick quite a bit. zizzybalubba (335), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA Apr 18, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine. Pours black with a nice tan head. Some light hop aroma with a hint of malty sweetness. Big roasted malt flavor; I certainly detect smoke as well. Some hops are detected as well but not overly done. Very well balanced. Not as thick as some Imperial Stouts but the finish is lingering and pleasant. Moderate alcohol burn. Overall an excellent Imperial Stout.
